Help with DV cam and Fire wire?

I have a Cannon DV camcorder. I recently just bought a PCI Firewire card and a 4-6 pin cable. I can't get my computer to see that the camera is plugged in. Any ideas?

On my Panasonic Mini-DV camcorder, there's a certain mode the camcorder has to be in for the computer to be able to hook up to it. It took me awhile to figure that part out since the owner's manual sucked at telling me that. I thought my camcorder was not working properly.

If I remember correctly, it had to be in playback mode, not in link mode. Link mode actually is used to link via USB cable to the computer so that the computer can read the SD Memory card in the camcorder, just like a card reader. Logically you'd think you'd have to be in link mode to link the camcorder to the computer, but it was actually playback mode. Therefore, the firewire was simply just another video cable in a sense that the computer can recognize.

I have to do this too when I connect it to my stand-alone DVR/DVDRW via firewire.

It has been awhile since I've done this straight to the computer...

How are you attempting to connect your camcorder to the computer? What kind of program are you using to capture the video?

Like in Windows Movie Maker (comes standard with XP), to capture video you just go to the "capture video" option under the File menu. If your device isn't recognized then you will get a message that there's no device connected.

If it is recognized, then just start recording then quickly hit play on your camcorder.

Wow, the reasons could be endless on why it's not connecting ranging from bad firewire card, bad firewire cable, bad camcorder, improperly installed firewire card, etc. Don't even know where to start.

Maybe borrow someone else's camcorder to see if it'll connect?

Maybe install the card into another computer to see if it'll connect?

Maybe go to Circuit City and buy their $100 DVD player/recorder and hook up the camcorder via firewire and burn onto dvd, then rip dvd onto your computer.

So many possibilites, good luck.

Yeah I know. As it turns out my sisters boyfriend does a lot of DV cam stuff for school. So I'll interchange all of my stuff with his to see what the problem is.

Thanks for the help.

I have the same cam and have not had any troubles in fact the computer found it right away. i did use the software that came with the cam and it worked good but i have used other software as well including nero and it has found the camera right away i would think it might be your fire wire card. Have you checked on the canon web site for any updates ? are your fire wire card drivers up to date as well ? just suggestions good luck
Cheers
John

Most companies have their OEM software on their website. Check there first. Then if they don't, email them, they possibly could just send you a link to download. I know that my Panasonic had the software available to download at their website.
