DSL Problems

well, i've been dealing with the problem since i got verizon DSL here at my house
I'm very happy with the internet service itself, but for some reason it hates limewire. Every time I try to download a file, it will download for a bit, then the connection will break, then it will connect and download for a bit more, then break again
in the end, barely any of a file gets downloaded because the frigin modem spends so much time connecting
its just driving me insane, i realize limewire and other filesharing services are not the greatest things for your computer, but i'd at least like to download the occasional song from it without it taking several days even though i have a pretty good internet connection

i'm pretty good with computers but honestly this problem is eluding me

if anyone has any clue what i can do then i'd appreciate it

thanks!

Ryan

Ports

I know that Verizon blocks certain ports. Try using another. Or... you could get cable which is faster...

What other programs have you tried to use to download? (trying to determine if it's just limewire)

Were you already using Limewire before Verizon with another ISP and it worked fine? (trying to determine if it's ISP related)

Have you hooked tried hooking either a different computer with Limewire to your DSL connection or your computer to a different internet portal recently and used Limewire? (trying to see if it's your computer now as it stands regardless of past success, or if it's your ISP)

i tried morpheus, it did the same thing to me, kicked me off all the time

i used to use limewire with my dial up connection (AOL) and it worked fine
the downloads were slow but they would download all day without the connection breaking

as for getting cable, that wont happen, im honestly really happy with verizon and this problem isnt gonna cause me to switch, plus my parents dont want to pay more than they are right now

as for using limewire on other computers, i used to use kazaa (yeah i know, viruses galore, i was young ) a couple years ago on my moms computer and it worked fine, but i've never tried limewire as far as i can remember
i might go down there and give it a shot if that could be the problem

thanks for all the helpful replies so fast, thats why i love this place! :

It's most likely a port issue. I don't Limewire but I'm sure it has a place you can go to to change the default port it uses. Or a random port button or something.

Here's an awesome site for lots of info on ports:

limewire is not safe for downloading if you want to avoid RIAA. unless use use a proxy server service. in fact one version of limewire had a security hole in it that allowed outside users to look into your entire computer regardless what you had your share settings on.

Not that it has anything whatsoever to do with limewire.
Bittorrent.
utorrent beta 1.5 with forced network encryption.
You'll have whatever download you like double time with songs that work every time, virus free.(never had one myself even though I scan everything I download)
Dump viruswire.

Here's a little dsl tip for everyone..

I work for a Canadian DSL internet company. I now know both cable and dsl systems inside and out having worked both a cable contract with one company, and recently a dsl contract with another. One being Road Runner a few years ago, now (major Canadian DSL company, unamed for now).

I'll just give you this one scenario I get alllll the time. ALL the time. It drives me nuts.
The dsl modems are so very picky about line length vs cable.
If you have ANYTHING but a 6 foot long rj11/phone cord from your modem to your phone jack, you're screwing yourself over. You have a bad line sync guaranteed.
I always have people call in telling me their connection sucks. I tell them they have to use a 6 foot cable. The dsl modems cannot achieve a perfect sync on anything else. They continue telling me how it's worked fine for 2 years, they know what they're talking about.. blah blah blah. Well congratulations retard!! You're paying for 3 meg, and you're barely getting 1! Good job!

I'll just continue using my cable internet very, very happily. The connection issues people have calling in nearly constantly over dsl are astounding.

ok, i'll definitely try bitorrent

so about my dsl then, I should be using a longer phone cord from my modem to the jack???
i'ver got like a 3 foot one on there now, as the jack is right underneath my modem
so i should get a longer one???
i believe you entirely, but what exactly is the reason for this???
its just seems like such a stupid reason for slowness...
