Question What to do with old computer/networking equipment

Okay here's my dilemma, I have about $75,000 in computers and networking gear in my basement. Routers, servers, L3 switches and stuff like that.

Unfortunelty the $75,000 pricetag is 1998 dollars, the stuff is worth about .75 cents a pound in scrap metal in 2006 dollars. So what do I do with this stuff? I,ve tried Ebaying it but who wants to buy a Compaq PIII XEON server that weighs about 75 pounds and would cost more to ship it than it's worth.

If anyone wants here wants this stuff and is willing to come pick it up you are welcome to have it otherwise I think it's destined for the curb.

Anyone have suggestions for old stuff? The stuff works but again it's all older stuff and just not really worth anything.

Post an ad in Craiglist

hint: post it as a contact you within 2 days for pickup or it will be on the curb after that and they can get what they want.

My company had the same problem but their are computer guru's out there that will hop on it real quick.

I did this to an old stereo my parents had as "free" and ended up having 5 people bidding for it, got $200 for it. TOO COOL$$!

Sounds like a good idea.
If you were closer to my location, I'd pick up some gear for sure. Can't have enough of a good thing. ;)

Make a list of all the stuff. Maybe there is a chance someone here would want something and would pay.

Okay here's the list
Compaq Proliant ML530 PIII XEON with Dual processor slots I only have 1 processor no hard drives
Compaq Proliant ML350 No Drives
Baynetworks AN router
Baynetworks Accelar 1050 Layer 3 switch
Cisco 700 ISDN router ( I am ebaying this but I don't have much hope for it selling)
Nortel CLAM ISDN router brand new in the box(same comment as the Cisco)
The servers have the Compaq 430 SCSI controller.
Plus lots of little misc stuff like hubs and switches

That's about it, anyone want it? Make offer.

More stats on the Compaq Proliant ML530 and 350 servers. Processor speeds, RAM, PCI slots, Rackmountable or case size, etc.

Number of ports on the Baynetworks AN Router?

Oh yes, any racks? ;) I've been looking for a 24-42U rackmount with sides and doors.

Proccesor speeds on the servers are for the 530 is

XEON PIII 870 MHZ it has a single proc in it now with a slot for the second proc. It takes PC133 memory which I have tons of so I can fill the available slots with RAM I don't know how much at this point I am traveling for work and will look at it when I get home. Don't know the number of PCI slots but it does have the SCSI 430 smart controllers which I believe it will do RAID 5 with SCSI three drives. No drives installed just a single 9gig SCSI drive but it will take the hot swap drives. It is not a rack mount it is a floor model that weighs a ton with wheels. The 350 I am not sure it is a dual proc with only a single proc installed. and it is a case. But I beleive they can be turned into rack mounts if you take the covers off.

The AN router has 8 ethernet ports the 2 other AN's don't have anyports for ethernet but they have slots for 2 T1's.

If you want make me an offer and I'll give you everything I have on the whole list execpt for the 2 ISDN routers I have on EBAY now but if you want to wait after the auction and make an offer with the 2 routers then let me know. I don't really want to throw all this stuff away but I need the space.

If you are really intrested PM me and we'll talk.

Donate it to a school. I have donated and wrote off about 10 older systems already. I don't get much at tax time for them but the kids enjoy having a PC in their class.

Donate to a school that needs it, and ask them to give you a donation receipt for a huge tax write-off.
Your equipment may not be worth much to a computer enthusiast, but it sure would help change the lives of children who have never used a computer before.
