Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool

This is yet again pissing me off. I know that it is an Active X control add-on. In fact, for the longest of time I had this add-on disabled. Just now I was thinking to myself that it has been awhile since I have ran Windows Update. So I did. It demanded that I download the newest version of Windows Genuine fuck me in the ass tool. So I figured what the hell. I can always disable it in the manage add-on screen. So I went to do that, and it says "This add-on is managed by your administrator". WTF!? I am the fucking administrator! It won't let me disable the fucking thing!

Any ideas what is going on here? Am I overlooking something obvious, or is Microsoft continuing to crawl further up my ass?

Here is a screen shot...

TIA,
^chase

Trying not to hijack, but how do they determine if it's genuine or not? Not that it affects me cause I own ALL of the Microsoft products that are on my computers.

Cause like if it's just a simple check of the Key and seeing if someone else was using that key, wouldn't a lot of legit users be screwed if someone out there with a keygen or something is already using their legit Key?

Download the latest Validation bypass file from March 2006. It will let anyone with a non-legit copy of windows do the update. It replaces the Legitcontrol.dll file in your win/system32 directory.

You should be able to find it on any P2P site around the net. If not, shoot me a PM with your email(the file is under 100k) and I can send it to you when I get home tonight.

Or you could just copy/paste this handy bit of script in to your address bar and hit "Enter" before clicking on "Express" or "Custom" in Windows Update:

javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all')

Thanks guys.

I have legit copies of XP so that doesn't have me worried. I guess I just have this thing with Microsoft baby sitting me. I'm also worried that someone will use it to hack into a computer (possibly mine).

I have (two). I just get scared when Microsoft does stuff like this because I'm scared it opens up a security hole.

It's not just a matter of having legit copies - mine are "real" too. But I don't like MS (or anybody for that matter) crawling into my computer and doing stuff behind my screen without me knowing about it. I'm the guy that puts a floppy in the drive at work so the IT people can't update my computer (remotely) without me knowing about it. Too many times their "updates" create unforeseen problems ...

Changing legitcheck.dll is a matter of hex-editing three bytes. There are plenty of places on the net with instructions, google is your friend.

By the way, it's NOT illegal to disable WGA. Microsoft has as much as said so. But for Windows/Microsoft Update to run correctly, you need to use the Javascript entry. Just hacking the .dll doesn't really shut off WGA.

Now Vista, (January,2007) that will have some intrusive license checks that will require an active internet connection. If you don't have an internet connection, MS will sell you a license code and a specific version of Vista, but you have to jump through some serious hoops to get it.
