Advice Please

A workmate has a pc that she has recently got from another member of her family. I do not (at this time) know the make etc but I believe its about 5 yrs old. She is using dial up and windows Xp. I believe that she was using it to play games on for a while but her problems seem to have started once she went online. Her ISP is people pc and up until now she has not been able to use outlook express as it keeps coming up with errors. I think it may be something to do with the settings etc as she mention SMTP and the mail is undeliverable etc. She has called them but as yet they seem unable to fix it.
Also she downloaded some wallpaper (against my advice) without having anti virus up to date etc. After this her pc started getting even weirder. I suggested she set up an alternate e-mail with msn so at least she could sent/receive mail etc. She completed the registration but when she gets the msn page she is bombarded with pop up adds! I advised her to get Norton 06 run it and then get all the Windows updates done (critical ones at least). Over the weekend she purchased systemworks and installed it etc. Now all she can get is her wallpaper and nothing else. Norton came back with 2 viruse's on the scan. The pc is booting up very slowly but as I say all she can see is wallpaper. I have never heard of norton doing this, anyone got any ideas about what is going on? :fun_71:

For Outlook Express:

You need the ISP's address for POP and SMTP. It will be something like pop.peoplepc.com. Both values will be different. You also need your username and password. Once you have those, it's simple to plug them in to Outlook Express.

For XP:

Sound like it's completely buggered up. Can she boot into safe mode and get a full screen? I'm not sure though if you can run Norton in safe mode. Doesn't XP also have a feature that lets you roll back to a last known good configuration? If so, try that. There are also boot discs that will are loaded with software. Look on various sites for them. They will allow you to boot into your pc, do a virus scan, adware etc... then try booting XP again. The best thing to probably do is wipe out XP and reinstall it. If the PC is that old it's about time for a good cleansing anyways.

Yes Xp has something called system restore but you will need to "get into" windows to run it. We also do not know if the viruse's were there before she got it. Safe mode would be a good bet but my "gut reaction" is just to re-format the hard drive and take it from there.

I don't have an answer to your question. However, I do have an accusation to make. I think you are using the members of this fair board to make you look smart so you can tap the hot poonanny of your 'workmate'! Shame! Shame!

The computer is infested with viruses and spyware. If you have the OS discs, reformat and reinstall. It's possible to clean it up, but I bet it would be quicker this way.

As far as Norton Systemworks, it is a bloated overpriced system hog. There are better, cheaper and less resource-intensive products out there but that's her call.

I would avoid any of those anti-virus packages. They do more harm to your pc than they help. Simply tell her to be prudent with her surfing, e.g. do not open any unknown emails, unknown .exe files and pictures. Don't install any downloaded software without doing a scan of it first. Then once a week or month, do a free online virus scan. Both McAfee and Panda have free scans on their websites.

Well she has got it working now, systemworks seemed to be "bogging it down". I am not sure if she had a virus but she is now using AVG.
