XP question

I purchased the XP home addition about three months ago. While I have has issues, overall I like it.

Here's the question.

Has anyone figured out how to install XP on more then one machine without having to go buy a new copy of it.

(By the way, I am pro business. I just feel I should not have to buy a new CD just for home use onlyfor each machine)

Thanks.

I HAVE HEARD that the activation thingy is serial number specific. For example, if you have a serial number that belongs to a business, you won't have to go thru activation. That's because businesses usually image PCs, so they can't go thru the same process the everyday user.

But this is just what I have HEARD...

what happens is, during install of xp, right after you have set everything up, your computer connects to the internet, and sends all the information to microsoft, this is known as a call home. if they find out that your serial is already been used once on a different machine, MS kills xp and our computer will just restart over and over until you format your hard drive. the only way is to do some illegal work and get a copy off the net

I also heard that MS takes a screenshot of your computer hardware configuration.... so even if you uninstall it on one PC... and want to install it on another... you will have to call Microsoft to have them release the licence to that old PC.

There definitely is a business version because I have it here at work and have installed it on 4 different machines with the same CD ... we have a site license with Microsoft.

I wouldn't hesitate to stick with Windows 2000 professional... never had a problem very very stable.

I ran 2000 Pro on a machine for 30 days without it crashing or restarting.

The only reason it wasn't longer is because the computer shut down for some reason. Perhaps overheating CPU..
