Is this a good deal?

I may buy this upgrade package from a local store, but am torn between a $2000 computer I want and the nice $350 for this upgrade....

I currently have a 1 GHZ Pentium 3, Intel D815EEA Mobo machine from the dark ages. I found this upgrade: (all CDN $)

BCOM Computers $333 (Upgrade Bundle C)
- Intel Pentium D 805 2.66GHZ Dual Core 533 FSB
- Intel BOXD945GTPLKR Motherboard
- Rendition PC2-4200 1GB (2*512MB) 533MHz DDR2

The total at NCIX is $430.... I'd be getting about $100 off (NCIX is the cheapest I could find). Is this worth it? Any comments about the above components?

That's a great price for that upgrade. So long as you have everything else that you can port over from your old pc, i.e. hard drives, optical drives, case etc. then this is the way to go.
But I see a couple problems. One, you will need a new video card, yours is probably PCI or AGP and you will need to buy a PCI-E card(you don't want to use the crappy on board video). Two, your current hard drives are good for pure storage, but you will want to buy a new SATA drive for your main OS drive. Much more performance on them.
Lastly, you might want to wait a bit. That package you would buy would already be last generation. If you want Intel, they are releasing Core Duo 2 in a few months. These processors will be a big jump from their current ones. If you like AMD, they've just released their AM2 processors.

actually, have you ever seen the video on their new boards, its actually pretty respectable, now dont get me wrong, there is better out there, but for an on board video, it can hold its own, whcih for DJ will probably be better than what he is used to, considering he currently only has a 1ghz proc, (not sure what vid card, but prob not that great)

yeah the intel on board video is decent, and since it is a dual core cpu probably would not notice the performance drain that much if at all, the Core 2 Duo's are coming out mid next month and they mop the floor with everything, according to the early benches the new intel CPU's beat out AMD's like $1200 FX-62 that runs at 2.8 ghz, and the intel was only running at 2.4 ghz and costs 316 bucks supposedly, needless to say i am going with intel in august when i rebuild unless amd pulls a wonder out of its ass, the am2 is nothing new at all, basically just the use of ddr2, other minor tweaks, but that is basically what it is

sorry, i forgot to answer, yeah i think its a good deal, but if you realy wanted a significant jump, id wait for the new ones a couple more weeks and spend a little bit more on them, the entire achitecture is more improved and overall will last you longer

Thanks for the input guys... I've got a radeon 9600 Pro (AGP) card now, so I'd have to get a new one. I also found out the PSU on this thing is a pathetic 200W, so I'd need a new one of those, new HD, ect.... I'd probley be better off getting a new computer. there goes the paycheck!

I have been planning on this AMD system:
$2042 CDN AMD computer
Is that AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Dual Core worth $575 CDN?

But will these new CPU's be worth the wait? Will they really be that cheap?

Here is a good review of the Intel Core 2 Duo (Conroe) CPU: Bit-Tech.net Conroe review
Quote:
Please remember that the Conroe-based system was built and configured by Intel. Both the operating system and benchmarks were installed by Intel performance engineers, so we cannot guarantee that the bit-tech configured operating system was in the same state as the one on the Intel-built Core 2 Duo machine. We were not allowed to make any changes to the Intel-built system.
Sounds kind of fishy to me! I'll be interested of the indipendant "real world" tests hold up.
Some info on AMD's answer to intel's new chip.... 4x4!

Yes that AMD is that expensive. That's a nice system. Can't say anything about the price but it is a kickass system. That's the same case, memory, hard drives and dvd I have.

But:
1) Supposedly in July Intel is cutting the prices of all of their processesors by a lot. Now I've got an AMD system right now, but I only went with them coz they were cheaper for the same performance. Now, Intel will soon be cheaper.
2) Why are you wasting money on Windows? You can get it anywhere for free.

yea, but staying one step ahead of M$ "geniune Advantage" crap is a pain in the ass! I figure I can pony up $160 for piece of mind.

Now I find this sweet deal: what to do?
- Intel 805 Dual Core Processor
- ASRock 775VM800 Motherboard
- Samsung PC3200 512MB DDR400
- Logisys 51WBK Case & 450W PSU
Total Bundle for $288 CDN!

In all my years of running Microsoft OS's not one day have I been without service. I always keep my pc updated too.

Within hours of MS trying to patch the update site with validation, there is a release on the net to crack it. If you are buying XP it is a complete waste of money. You could buy an extra 300-400 gig hard drive for that. I doubt MS will put much effort into securing XP one Vista is released. So you should have many years of worry free service with a pirated copy.
