LAPTOP CELERON - Replace with P3 possible?

Was just wondering if this makes sense:

I currently have a Toshiba Satellite S1800 I bought back in 2002. It's a Celeron processor @ 900mhz.

Would it be possible to buy a P3 mobile processor @ 1.2ghz and just replace the celeron with it? Someone told me they have the same socket for the pins etc.

you'd have to see if it was offered with the processor, cuase if it was, then yes you probably could. if not, possibly, but even less guarantees

They DO have the same socket.

BUT you need proper BIOS support and on many laptops, the chip is soldered to the motherboard making replacement impossible. Make sure your CPU is socketed!

Be sure to clean up all the old thermal compound, expecially if the old stuff was a wax. Radio Shack thermal compound works great, if applied properly it is every bit as good as the expensive ceramic compounds and is close to the performance of Arctic Silver (AS is only about 2-3 degrees cooler)! No I'm not kidding, it is that good!

With that said, I replaced the Celeron in my old HP laptop with a PIII and I am pleased with the results.

same socket huh? excellent! I'm not concerned for bios problems cuz i work at a telcom company and all we do there is deal with internet switches and hubs and what not. Actually (for you gurus) my department makes Nortel Networks Alteon Cheetah switches. I believe some of them are around 20000$-30000$ or something. Check it on ebay!

anyways...i'll have to research a bit more. I hate celeron processors!

You do realize that this spew has nothing to do with the ability of a laptop bios to see, boot, and use a non-standard processer.

Yeah I was wondering about his big long line about the telcom company and the bios. Just didn't mix.

Motherboard is the key...If the mobo is p3 compatable..and a similar unit is offered with a p3 processor..you should be able to flash the bios with the p3 compatable flash (assuming of course it is in fact a different flash)...and BOBs your uncle...start googling

Ladies, please. If you'd piece one and one together you'd realise I meant getting a blank part/bios is not a problem considering i deal with that stuff all day long @ work.
That's what i meant ;) Just so we're clear.

And thanks, I'll check around to see if it was ever offered with a P3!

the problem with that is, even with a blank bios chip, you may bot be able to flash it with a bios that reconizes it and all the supporting hardware

well acutally if it's the same mb or if the satellite S1800 was offered with a P3, then i can go to Toshiba's website and download a new flash bios update and re-flash with that (assuming they have one that supports a P3)
