Windows XP Validation issues. I can't be the only one!

Hey guys...

I just recently completely wiped the hard drives and re-installed windows. I got the proper activation codes from Microsoft over the phone since my original key code was used too many times or something like that, even though this is the only computer i ever used it on. Anyways... heres the problem: I'm running Windows XP Professional Edition and can't validate. I got to the point of installing "Windows Update" software, but cannot get any further in the update process until my copy of Windows is deemed Validated and Genuine by the folks at Microsoft. I looked up support on their web site and was told the only reason I would get an error was if my date and time were set incorrectly. If you ask me this doesn't make much sense, but I corrected the time and date (was off by maybe 40 seconds lol) by using my Time Warner DVR box time and waiting until it hit the next minute, so it should be literally within a second or 2 now. Is there anything else I should try? Anyone else have this problem? Its bugging me because everything is running very quickly now and have zero problems except for not recieving updates now. And I have firsthand knowledge that several of my programs and games have to be used under Service Pack 2 to run properly. If anyone can shed light I would really appreciate it.

Josiah

If your copy is legit,ie. you bought it, and they gave you the activation code, I would be giving them another call! If yours is "borrowed"..there are all types of ways around it....cough..torrent..cough..cough

I wouldn't call my situation legit. My dad gave me a copy of his and I'm using a code from a friend of mine that hasn't installed it on any computers. So technically its not legit but it would be if he had given me the copy. I'm just using my dads copy with another persons code, if that makes sense. *Bill Gates kicks down door, shoots me, and steals my wallet*. I might have mentioned it before but I do know a lot of my programs won't work properly on anything but SP2, such as a few games and device programs. I'll try tehkings method and post again with results. Thanks for the link, I honestly didn't think of searching because I thought it was just my computer with the problem.

Thanks!!

Of course MS is already starting to get wise to that. One of their new updates automatically installs the Validation tool again as an update. There's plenty of info on the web about the registry keys you need to edit to remove that and then just refuse the validation tool update in the future.
If you can't find the info..PM me and I'll forward the link I have with the instructions. Good luck.

only problem with refusing it (the validation tool)is, that you cannot download certian critical updates that you really should have :P (security)

You deserve to have problems. Your a thief. Activation was the greatest thing Microfoft has done to protect it's product. The great think is they will be providing the service for other software venders in Vista. Now they need to deactivate the illegal copies so they won't run instead of just not getting updates. Buy a legit copy and you will have no problems.

We just had to do 135 computer updates because some clown used an illegal corporate code on a big sale and is now bankrupt. Funny thing is we lost that contract 2 years ago and now made more money fixing his thieft than we would of on the original sale. Not to memtion a customer who has seen the other side and came back. I got his customer list from a former employee and fixing his past sales is like shootting fish in a barrel. I love activation

I plan on purchasing a fresh, new, fully legal copy of the XP Pro with SP2. I was just wondering if theres anything that could be done for now. I know i'm a thief lol. So are the other 90% of the population who burn CDs or share music files.

XP knows whether the code you are entering belongs with the CD you installed it from. Unlike a lot of software you can download etc. and purchase, there's not just 'the' activation code, there are many, and you need one that does belong to the disk from which you installed.

I'd suggest just going ahead and buying XP on the best deal you can. Vista is way too far off yet to wait for it, and I would never rush to get hold of the very newest version of any program til the bugs get worked out. XP sp2 is extremely solid and competent now. I tried a beta version of Vista on my laptop the other day and it didn't like my video drivers, didn't like my anti virus, didn't like my wireless networking... of course it's still in Beta but these are problems you get with new OS versions. I put XP back on the laptop because I want to use it, not futz with it.

Just a suggestion, and I don't work there or anything, www.tigerdirect.com often has XP on sale for probably as cheap as you'll find it, and they ship pretty quickly too. I don't endorse 'ripping off' anyone's software and you can expect to run into increasing problems if you're not 100% legit. I would say that probably most of the MS software that is being used around the world was never paid for and I don't blame them for doing the activation thing. If half of my product was being ripped off, I'd do the same thing.

Why any regular user would spend a single cent on Windows is beyond me. I've been using it's various versions for years and years and not a single day has gone by where I was without an OS. Whatever validation Microcrap thinks up, it's defeated the same day.

Go and download XP. It's free and no hassle. Use the money you save for booze, drugs or a new pair of shoes for the kids.

It actually has nothing to do with the CD. XP activation generates a hash code based on the hardware installed in the computer. I use a slipstreamed disc I made for my home built computer to install on my kids Compaq instead of the recovery disc with all that 'free' crap on it with no activation or WGA problem at all. I bet his problem is that his friend has loaned out that key he 'never used' to several other friends already.
