need a bit more info about the system.

Need what it has currently for RAM and what it will hold (max amount)

Need to know what kind of ram. (pc2700 etc)

a good place to get this would be the paperwork that came w/ the machine, or emachine tech support

http://www.emachines.com/support/upgrades.html

if you are running win xp I recommend 512 mb, altho xp will run on 128, it will be slow. very slow.

Your machine comes standard with 512mb. It has 2 banks of 1, which means you can have a maximum of 2 sticks at one time, but you don't have to have 2. I don't know whether that 512 is in 2 sticks or one, so you will have to look at your motherboard to see. Your system can support up to 2048, or 2 sticks of 1024(1GB). The kind you need to get is 184-DIMM DDR333 PC2700. BTW, I love tigerdirect. I just ordered $1200 worth of stuff myself. Hope that helps!!!

Just to set a good minimum, I know brother was running XP with only 128 MB ram and hated how slow it was he bought a new computer, simply because Dell wants like 3-400 for any memory upgrade. I think thats what he ended up paying for the new PC lol. Anyways, I wouldn't use anything less than 512 MB and wouldn't recommend anyone else use less either. I am using 1 GB and it runs pretty smoothly.

256 is minimum for xp, 512 is recommended, and 1gb is worth the extra and I wouldn't get less. I just bought 2 512 PNY dual channel DDRs for $25 each after rebate!

IDK, I'd just buy a 1GB secondary stick and be done with it.......1GB sticks aren't expensive and it'll make your machine run better. I've been looking on a good deal for notebook RAM for a while now, Iooking to upgrade from the standard 512MB it came with (2 sticks of 256MB with 128MB being used for video memory which leaves me with a grand total of 384MB). I have to pull one stick to make room for the new stick, so I'll be running 1GB + 128MB RAM after I get the 1GB stick.

You do the mods to the notebook yourself? I have no qualms about ripping my desktop open and installing stuff but I still haven't disemboweled my precious crotchtop.

its one screw to get to notebook ram, id say it is easier than doing a desktop simple cuz you can easily get to it with nothing in the way or sitting on your lap or whatever. i borderline feel that 512 is minmum for windows xp at times, especially after having it for awhile and have more things installed, just looked real quick on newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231036

Memory Upgrade

Here ya go guys.

http://www.corsairmemory.com/corsair...or_search.html

I like Corsair, just upgraded to 1 GB of RAM recently and had no problem installing (2 x 512mb) them. Go there to find out what type you need, and then even if you don't want to get corsairs you can still find out what the exact type of RAM that will work in your system.

Also after you find what type you need go to sites like pricewatch.com or resellerratings.com. Sometimes it will help you find the lowest prices.
