Pre-ordered Core 2 Duo

Well.. it's been about 5 years since I upgraded anything on my computer... and as reliable and speedy (for what I do most of the time) as my P4 2.4 Northwood has been, I've decided to build a new computer. Nothing newer than my P4 2.4 seemed compelling enough to justify upgrading... except the soon-to-be-released Core 2 Duo.

I've pre-ordered one (E6600; 2.4GHz 4MB cache) from ShopBLT.com for $343. Demand for these chips is expected to far exceed supply, at least in the retail channel, so I decided it would be best to get in line sooner rather than later.

Other than that, I'm planning on getting a Gigabyte mATX i965 motherboard, 2GB of DDR2-800 memory, and a 256MB GeForce 7600GT video card. I want to be ready for Vista.

False. Check out any review currently available and you'll see that more often than not the Core 2 Duo outperforms current AMD chips.

OMFG!!! did you see any benches, the midranges Conroes beat out FX-62's and 4800+'s

and Mark, if you want to be ready for vista, shouldn't you consider getting a DirectX 10 card? I am definately getting rid of my 4400+ system for the new intel, already has someone buying it

it all matters on wtf your doing, on the godly question " AMD or Intel"... AMD is better in the whole 2+ cores technology, hell-they released a QUAD CORE [thats right, 4!!!!] by AMD... After the Intel Itaniums, they started to get worse and worse.. Glad to hear you got a Gigabyte, There by far the easiest to overclock with.. Good luck though! and dont forget to send us some benchmark pictures!!! oh- and f*** vista.. trust me..

AMD Vs. Intel! Let the competition resume!

The Core 2 Duo is faster than the current AMD offerings, in most areas, it is 10-20% faster! And I thought my X2 4200 OC'd to 4600 was quick....

I'm glad to see Intel competitive again, AMD was getting a bit over the top on their CPU prices. AM2 socket X2 3800s will be selling for around $150 when the Core 2 Duo hits the street.

AMD will continue to compete in the low end and in powewr consumption. They plan to release a X2 3800 with a power disipation rating of just 35W, about the same as a 1.2GHz PIII! Low heat dual cores, I see an HTPC upgrade in the future....

The upcoming K8L CPU from AMD is their annswer to the Core 2 Duo, supposedly it's a LOT faster, but who knows yet.

My current rig is fast enough for now, but it's kinda wierd not knowing who I will choose for my next CPU. The last Intel CPU I had in my primary machine was a PIII-450.....

Hey, congrats on the Gigabyte board. I love Gigabyte motherboards, 99% of the PCs I sell are equipped with them. There is ocasionally an Asus board if the Gigabyte is out of stock. The mobo is one place you just can't skimp on. The Intel chipsets are great, I only had trouble with one, the infamous i820. The NVIDIA nForce Intel Edition chipsets are also really good.

Hey, what kind of power supply are you using? Make sure you get a GOOD one, not the cheap POS units. I use Fortron Source Power units, I haven't had one fail, they are great and they are reasonably priced.

As for a DX10 GPU, they don't exist on production cards yet. That will come in the form of NVIDIA (G80) and ATI's (R600) next chipsets. The Vista Aero interface is based on DX9, so a 7600GT is ideal.

Nice comp man, enjoy the speed!

AMD hasn't released anything with 4 cores. Intel will probably be first to market with quad cores (Clovertown and Kentsfield.. which look very impressive, by the way), but the K8L should be available shortly thereafter. Their 4x4 thing is a platform.. not a CPU. It's also unclear whether or not they'll let you use inexpensive dual core chips or only the more expensive variety. If it's the latter, the 4x4 platform won't be very efficient in terms of price/performance.

The number 1 supercomputer in the world, as rated by Top 500, is an Itanium-based system.. so let's not get into that. I'm well aware that Intel wanted Itanium to be more than just a niche product and that it wasn't very successful in that regard.. but the CPU itself is still very powerful and useful.

I've always been an ASUS man.. but I haven't seen or heard anything about their mATX offerings for the 965 chipset, and I have actually seen a picture of the board I'm interested in from Gigabyte (GA-965GM-S2).. so Gigabyte is probably the way I'll go. I'm not at all interested in overclocking, though.

Aside from the CPU, the only things I've ordered were the power supply and case. I'll order the rest when I have a better idea when the CPU will be shipping.

I've always used PC Power & Cooling power supplies... or Seasonic.. but this time I'm trying a Thermaltake

Anyone want my old CPU/mobo/RAM? It's a P4 2.4B (Northwood, 533 fsb), ASUS P4T533-C motherboard, and 1GB pc1066 RDRAM.

mark dont do it, i am with you on this, ONLY PC power and Cooling or seasonic, i would hardly call gigabyte the best in overclocking, from my many motherboards gigabyte was sweet, but the highest overclock was with my abit and dfi, i have a very bad taste in my mouth from my last asus board therefore i would not buy another one, although i know that they are sweet, amd has the "new" am2 sockets out now, which basically is something that Intel has been doing for years (ddr2, LGA socket, ect...) so its not realy able to call it new at all

It's already ordered and on its way.. so the discussion is moot. I'm going to see how this power supply goes. If it turns out to be flaky or needs to be returned, I'll get a PC Power and Cooling or Seasonic and be done with it.

There *are* good power supplies that don't cost $100+, and though I've never had a PC Power and Cooling power supply fail on me (I've always had one in my computer and have seen them in many servers over the years)... I also see many cheaper power supplies work for years under less than ideal conditions.

they work but you dont get all the power that you claim that you get, like i have had others, just realize if i am am gonna pay all that money for computer parts id like them to get all the constant power that they need and want, my bro uses a Thermaltake, its not bad, but id hate to go from a PCPC to a Thermaltake, i am using that Seasonic S12 now and i love it

No power supply provides 100% of the power it claims to, and while some are better than others in that regard.. it's not always a significant factor.

well i know its not ever 100% but more than like 30% the thermal take will be fine, i am sure that you probably wont be doing anything that sweet, that requires too much more power and it will save you a lot, i never heard/ordered fromo those guys that you say, i am thinking about it cuz i realy want that conroe

Yeah, I've never ordered anything from them either... which makes me wonder a bit... but I can always cancel my order if I suspect anything not on-the-level.
