Serious Problem, help please..........

I apprear to have a nasty problem with my pc. On startup it loads terribly slowly amongst other things. I first noticed a problem when I opened up my I tunes and it would not play any of my music. I could hear something but it was not anything of mine. I had added to it that very morning (i tunes that is). I duly deleted that song but it still would not play. I then loaded spy-sweeper and found that I had 4 types of adaware and 87 files. I removed them but it still has not solved the problem. I yesterday purchased system mechanic professional and ran that. It showed that my pc was in real bad shape but after running the application it showed and improvement on various levels. When I sometimes move from a page to another my screen goes black for about a second or so and then goes to the new page. I ahve run Norton Anti Virus & the disc defragmenter and there seems to be no problems there. I have had a message from Microsoft that my pc has recovered from a serious error, it does mention my Nvidia video card drivers but I am unsure as to why. I am inclined to think that my h/d is on its last legs and needs replacing. There does seem to be a variety of problems with it but as I say the startup is incredibly slow. I am using win patrol to monitor my startup and there does not appear to be anything there that should not be. Any suggestions or ideas would be most welcome. Thanks Max

ok, first of all do a thorough scan disk of this. to do this go to my computer right click on the c: drive and click on the tools tab. then select "check for errors" select both check boxes and it should prompt you that scan disk needs to do this task on the next boot up. clikc yes or ok. reboot the computer. it should go into scan disk then. This will tell you if your harddrive is starting to get bad sectors for one, and it should also fix any file system problems that you might have.

Next, get the latest version of your nVidia drivers off the net. Uninstall the old ones and reboot. your screen resolution and color depth will be set to the default minimum, but thats ok. INstall the new drivers and reboot again afterwards.

Now go and download adaware SE and Spybot search and destroy. install and update both of them. open spybot and immunize internet explorer.

This is very important: reboot the computer into safemode without network support. to do this press f8 right after POST. once you are in safe mode, run adaware, then run spybot and check for problems.

You said you had Sys mechanic pro, check somewhere in there and see if it will let you change your startup menu. I imagine that you have a bunch of being loaded into memory at startup that you really don't need. take out things like quicktime or realplayer. all these are doing is wasting memory. They are in there so that they load faster when you run them, but really you only need them when you want to run them and yes it will take a bit longer to load but it is not that much.

Good luck

if all else fails, back up your stuff and format. re-install windows prefably an edited version using nlite, with it you can create your own image cd of windows with just the stuff you need.

or you can just get a new hd and have two, use the new hd for your boot drive and then you can just use your existing hd as storage.

some tips on startup progs, like intrepidhero said, get spybot sd(search and destroy) and adaware by lavasoft. Make sure you get the correct stuff cuz there are junk progs out there with similar names. Also you shouldn't waste monies on those sort of progs like spysweeper. Get rid of norton thats just a memory hog, get yourself Kaspersky anti-virus if you must have an anti virus. Also i see you have sys mechanic pro, i dont know what that is, I don't feel like googling it, but again, you don't need to spend monies on progs to fix your boot lines. just run msconfig and edit it there. Take out all the junk and just keep the stuff you need. Remove microsoft updater, securty center, msn mesenger...

you say you got probs with hearning sound, do you have onboard sound or a card? either way make sure you get correct latest drivers for it. I really hate itunes and any mac software so Id recommend you lose that, but Im assuming you use it for your ipod. Otherwise get simple plain ol winamp or better yet VLC media player. dont even bother with junk like realplayer, quicktime, wmp, or anything else....

Get voptXP, its a good defraggin prog, free, and better than the windows one.

get cacheman XP, it is a good prog for memory. you can monitor it much better than alt-crtl-del

good luck

System mech is alot like Ace utilities.....if you feel comfortable DLing from torrent,etc...try and find a program called "spinrite" this..http://www.grc.com/spinrite.htm

there are "free" copies floating around...it scans your HD and fixes what it can, amazing little progam, just takes a long time.

Like the others said, chkdsk and scan for viruses/spyware and update the nvidia drivers.

If that fails, backup your stuff and insert your operating system disc and run my favorite commands, FORMAT and SETUP!

If you do reformat, here's the shortlist of programs you need to keep it running well:

AdAware SE
Spybot Search And Destroy
Windows Defender
CCleaner
Cacheman 5.5
Norton AntiVirus

Get the latest drivers for all your hardware, video, sound, networking and motherboard chipset are the most important ones to update

Don't forget to update Windows often (turn ON automatic updates!) and defrag once a week.

good point on Norton...

but yes, defragging DOES help. it will also make your harddrive work much less and last longer and make your computer much faster in boot up and shut down. I would say the interval you use for defragging would depend on how much you use your computer. you might get by with defragging once a month.

The pc has now gone in for repair!! I was reying to work on it but it just got worse. I went to nvidia's web page and it would only display half of the page. It would then stop working completely mouse and all. It would also do this on msn. I took it in the day before yesterday and I will be calling them later if they do not call me first. I am on Mrs Max's pc at the moment so I am unable to access my e-mail which is a bit of a pain.

No, its not at the Geek Squad!! There is not one near us so I have taken it to a local pc store. They said yesterday that they thought that it was a software problem which I find kinda weird as I have not installed anything new recently.I may get it back today with a bit of luck!! I sure hope so as I have work that I ned to do before I go to Detroit on Sunday.

Its your video drivers or your video card. All you have to do is download the new ones from nvidia. Theres a small chance your card is overheating but anytime it says there was a serious error becuase of your video card its becuase of you drivers which have to be updated from time to time.
