Strange problem with loading programs

My cousin called me up because I'm the computer geek in the family. Shes having a problem with her Gateway desktop running XP Pro SP2. When it boots up, windows loads fine but whenever you try to open a program, it doesn't open on the screen. The program seems to open because when you go to shut the computer down it comes up with the "end program" screen for the programs that you tried to open, its just never visible. Control panel isn't available either and the start menu is empty. I tried booting in safe mode but the only thing I could open was Word. Any ideas??

Could be spyware, Malware or adware, I have a few programs that do a good job of removing them and getting the computer back up and running correctly, I will burn a disk, and get it to you on Monday. My second and third jobs are dealing with all that crapware, I have found ways to remove it that save me alot of time.

Thanks alot. i'd really appreciate that. Iwent through the same thing awhile ago on my brother's computer the difference being that I was able to start in safe mode and the junk wouldn't load so I was able to clean it out. She was afraid she would have to get a new computer so I told her worst case I might have to wipe out her harddrive which was better than buying a new box but she has alot of files I'd like to try and save.

The bad part with the new spyware is that some of it works in safe mode, it is a small amount but I have worked on some systems that spyware is backed up by viruses, and those are a lot of fun to deal with. I deal with recovering files also; a friend of mine was at the state crime lab in Meriden and showed me ways of getting files 2 and 3 layers down. You need special software and another computer to do the recovery with, but thatís no problem.

best way is to take out the hd in that faulty computer and plug it into a working computer, then use a virus scanner like kaspersky and adware/malware scanner like ad-aware se personal on it. That way, the crap cant load and hide itself. After you do that, you should be able to pop the hd back into the original computre, boot it and clean up your msconfig lines. All the startup progs and services. Good luck

Unless there's something that she's really gotta have... Wipe it! You'll spend forever and tomorrow trying to figure it out and come away with nothing but a headache... Trust me, I see it every day. Damn salespeople take their laptops home and let the kid play with it, then hand it to me. "How did it get this way?" "I dunno..." (Yeah, I bet you don't). "Oh yea, my kid was surfin' the net."
