dvd rom drive

ok... I got an old HP w/ an amd 700 and 256mb ram in it. the original harddrive crashed and I replaced the drive. reinstalled windows 98se on it and got it running. I want to wipe it and install windows xp on it, but my copy is on a dvd drive. this POS has a dvd drive but I cannot get it to boot w/ it. It will go straight to win 98 from the harddrive. when I go into setup, the bios does not even see the drive, but once it gets into 98, the drive is there and I can use it.

the drive is a samsung DvD-Master 8E Model # SD-608. this shitheap came w/ the computer.

So the question is, am I gonna have to get a different dvd drive to do this, or is it the motherboard not being able to support booting from a dvd drive?

The MB does support booting from a regular cd rom or cd rw drive and I have no problems doing so.

I have gone as far as unhooking the power and data cables from the cd rom drive and just hooking the dvd drive and setting the jumper to "master". stil no go.

Any ideas?

It sounds to me like the drivers needed for your DVD drive are not available to the system when you boot. The drive is recognized in windows 98 becasue the drivers are installed in windows. Why not just inititate the install from within windows 98? You can still do a clean install without booting to the disk. When you put the disk in it might autorun, if not, manually open up setup.exe on the disk. You'll get a screen that pops up welcoming you to windows xp. All you have to do is select the first option of "install windows xp", then when it enters setup just select "new installlation" instead of "upgrade" from the pulldown menu and you should be all set.

Bootable XP floppies.

You can get them from microsoft:

The disks are basically the first part of the setup program, which load all the system drivers etc, then your dvd can take over from there.

I had to do it this way on a friends laptop that wouldn't boot from the cd drive...

1) Find out the revision, make and model of your motherboard. Go to it's website and see if there is an update. I bet there is. Apply it

2) Make sure all your IDE devices are properly set. IDE0/1-master/slave. Make sure none overlap

3) Recheck your bios. Try putting detect drives all on auto. See if it recognizes it when booting. If not, try forcing it in. Make sure the area where it chooses boot devices has the DVDROM set first, then your primary drive, then all other devices

When you have a bootable dvd in, it should either boot it automagically or ask you to press the space bar to boot from DVD.
