Bluetooth Question

So my new Samsung Sync phone is bluetooth enabled, and it is also a 3G phone, which means it has higher speed access. What I'm wondering is how or what do I need to use my phone as a "modem" for my laptop where wireless isn't available, i.e. my friggin 5 star dealership where I get my oil changes. TIA....

Are you sure it's OK for you to connect to the Internet through your phone? Cell network Internet access for laptops costs a lot. When you pay for data on your phone, they only plan on your phone being used to browse the web. I have unimited data on my iPhone and with a hack I can connect my laptop to it but I will likely get in major trouble with AT&T.

Or PM me with what carrier you are using and I'll try to help you out. ;)

If you don't have data access you are SOL or even worse, it will cost you a crap load of money in data charges. There are ways around it however....

Oh, and most providers don't allow you to tether (which is what you are wanting to do) so don't bother calling your provider for help.

Keep in mind going along with what Matt and I said about companies not allowing you to tether, it isn't too difficult for thme to figure out what you're doing, so make sure it is worth it to you.

to legally do it you'll need an at&t tehering data package which is a waste if you not gonna use it every day, as they start at about $79.99 (advertised, im pretty sure theres a $59.99 one we dont advertise everywhere you'd be able to get or even a $39.99 one as well). you can use any data package for DUN (dial up networking) but you better not let them catch you. it will limit you to dial up speeds though. bluetooh is the easiest way of DUN. there are download able programs you can google that will allow the highspeed tethering. again you better not let them catch you. check out hofo as tehking already posted the link for you or even try www.phonescoop.com it can be done. and the info is easy to find just dont let them catch you.

edit: here's a link with the advertised tethering packages, even though your not using a pda you are legally to use one of the packages per at&t rules:http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-pho...onal-plans.jsp
of course they're all hyped up with added crap thats how they get you. in my activations system i could add one at $59.99. im sure theres a package at $49 or $39 too but im not at work right now to verify it.

I use a software program called PDAnet, I use it when ever I need, Verizon wants 15.00 a month extra, on top of the data plan, PDAnet was 30.00 total, and it works very well.

I have a $20/month unlimited data plan, which gives me access to the 3G network, Cellular Video, etc... I'm fine with even dial up speed, I just wanna access the internet from my laptop without paying a rediculous wireless broadband plan.

if you fine with dial up. get a bluetooth dongle (unless your laptop has bluetooth built in already) connect to your pc via bluetooth and select DUN. it should work just fine. also I cleared mine off so I'm not 100 percent sure. but at samsung.com they should have a free pc suite. in that pc suite it might give you the option of DUN that way you can use a data cable or bluetooth dongle. I think the bluetooh route is much easier especially if your new to it. I'm posting from my phone right now so I can't give you detailed info in full at the moment. its really not that hard at all. you just don't want to abuse it or mention to an at&t rep that your tethering or your ass is grass and they are the mower.
