Should I take the plunge? Xbox360 or PS3?

I was at CC yesterday and ended up playing this offroad racing game Motor Storm on the PS3. I loved watching my truck disintegrate in slow-mo after hitting a stone embankment.

I used to spend way too much time playing the N64 way back when. I loved the off-road racing stuff(hence why I liked that Motor Storm), and the 1st person shooter-adventure stuff. I had a bad tendency to keep playing levels over to get things perfect.

So knowing this, I stayed away from all of the newer realistic CD/DVD systems that started coming out years ago. I knew with more realism, and capabilities I'd be hooked. Not to mention the high cost of the console and games. Plus you could see that, just like PCs, the next generation unit would come out a year or year-half later.

So if I were to take the plunge, which console should I go with realism, capability, game selection wise? the PS3 or the 360? Or is the next gen unit, that is backwards compatible, due out next year? I think I noticed the 360 was $100 less than the PS3. The cost of these units is unreal.

Doesn't one of them play Blu-Ray discs? Is there a website that compares the pros and cons of the two systems? Maybe I should rent one at Blockbuster or something and see if I'm really interested.

Your thoughts?

If you want to play games........go for the 360, if you want to watch bluray movies out of the box and basically have more of a 'gadget', apparently the PS3 is alright for that, the 360 has an add-on HD-DVD drive if you're into HD movies. Personally, I can't see paying $40 for a movie when I can have the regular DVD equvalent for 1/2 the price. The other thing is that HD-DVD has more support behind it, and the Bluray format is quickly turning into the next Betamax, especially with all of the DRM Sony is now throwing on the discs, which makes them unplayable on some early Bluray players.

I have a bunch of friends with 360's and a couple with PS3's.......the guys with 360's use them about 5 times more than the guys with PS3's. Pretty much everything that's on PS3 is done the same or better on 360 (better graphics and framerate), plus you don't get any force feedback on PS3. 360 also has a LOT more exclusive titles. What are the must have first party games on PS3? Gran Turismo HD is the only one I can think of......and it keeps getting delayed. Forza for Xbox and 360 has been a better series though since it was introduced IMO just because of the crash physics and playability of the series.

The Gamerscore feature of the 360 is pretty awesome as well, I love that feature!

Oh, I don't own either system, so I'd say I'm giving them a pretty objective review as how I see the systems. I have a Wii.

The kicker here is that PS3 has virtually ZERO exclusive titles. That and Xbox live are reason enough to go Xbox360 over anything else.

Xbox 360 has been out a bit longer, most bugs are gone and I love the gamerscore and things games can unlock I guess, so far I have only played Quake 4 on it... That and the 360 connects to your pc and acts as a multimedia center in a way.

Yes Rob, I knew you were a Wii-man. I'm not even considering that console.

So for those in the know, the PS3 is just out practically, so Sony won't release a new platform in the near future. Is the X-box 360 due for a revamp anytime soon? Maybe an X-box 720 or 1080 perhaps? Or just addon-type improvements?

Not having sampled these newer platforms, I was pretty impressed with the crash physics of the Motor-Storm game on the PS3. Maybe because of my ignorance of their current capabilities, I hadn't considered using these consoles for more than "game" use.

Motorstorm is apparently a pretty shallow game that could've been so much more. Most PS3 fans were dissappointed by Motorstorm, and most other games that have been released for PS3.

I have a LOT of Wii games, WAY too many in fact. I should stop burning the rentals. I haven't even tried most of them. I'm really anxious waiting for Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, and Geometry Wars!

Play Station. Not many hits. Lasts for years, no problems with games or itself

Xbox. Amazing games (Halo & PGR). Red blinking lights appears in a year or so

Xbox has a much longer warranty, but it does have that red circle of death. Some PS3 games lock up quite nicely. I'm gonna question the longevity of PS3 as well as there have been lots of overheating issues, and past PS and PS2 reliability has been historically bad.

I get the impression you are not going to be buying a PS3, Rob?
Now that I know Rob's opinion of the PS3, anyone else have any input

If this were a poll, I guess the Xbox would be ahead. I guess the cheaper initial cost is another thing in it's favor.

"Bluray format is quickly turning into the next Betamax,"

Just a reminder that Beta is still far superior for tape recording! Just as Bluray is for discs.

BTW, sixaxis means whenever you tilt the controller, it will do so in the games. Watch the video and decide.

And Rob, u got it all wrong, actually, Blu-Ray has more support behind them....

Put it this way. Everyone had the PS2 and a few had the xbox (Most xbox owners also had the PS2). Now since the 360 came about and Sony is still supporting the PS2 and also sony has the PS3 with the high price tag the 360 is raining champ and it will be a long time before the PS3 is worth buying.

Basically the the PS3 is a 50 - 50 chance. I would go with the 360.

360 v PS3

...a few facts about 360 v PS3.

Sony cannot touch Microsoft (PS3 = Sony, 360 = Microsoft) when it comes to online colaboration. The incredible ability to play your game versus other people around the world is awesome and is far superior.

360 is backward compatible, if you buy a hard drive, and has a far more extensive list of games.

The media access portion of 360 is really cool, but I am not familiar with the PS3's capabilities.

Video game picture and sound quality is equal.

If you add the HD drive ($199) for the 360 elite (newer HDMI version) the picture quality between HD and BlueRay is equal. The biggest benefit for BlueRay is that a BlueRay disc has significantly more storage capability than an HD disc.

I own the 360 simply because I enjoy the exclusives from XBox as they are more prevalent.

Not buying a 360 either.......so what's your point?

The gamerscore ALONE makes the 360 far superior to the PS3 IMO. I need a reason to play games now......and the gamerscore gives you achievement points for completing tasks in every single game on the 360. 1000 gamerscore points per game.
