Build Your Own DVR

Has anyone ever seen this or done this:
http://www.makezine.com/extras/4.html
I was just interested in how difficult it would actually be to do. The only part that seems difficult is getting the program to work that lets you open programs with your remote. It would be a good project to do once I get a little extra cash which isn't anytime soon and it would be nice to play N64 with your Xbox remote on this.

This just made my job easier. I was going to do this myself after all of my other projects were done. I knew it wasn't too difficult, but didn't know exactly what software/hardware to use. I am sure if I did some research I would have found this info out, but this guy did it all so I don't have to.
Thanks for the link.

My DVR is kinda like this. Instead of windows im using Suse10 and a ATI all in wonder with the remote. I even made a little script to run under a SSH to change channels and set recording times for shows/movies instead of walking to the DVR. How ever I do use RealVNC a lot but mostly for watching TV on my computer in my home office.

If you are looking for something that is nearly plug-n-play, give this software a try. I haven't got the chance to try it myself, but there are a couple of fellow techs at the shop that use it. Apparently it is as close to plug-n-play as you can get...

http://mysettopbox.tv/knoppmyth.html

Basically it is the most famous Linux TV program, MythTV, bundled with a specially designed version of Knoppix (Linux OS) that is set up specifically to be used as a TV box (DVR).

I tried it but it wasn't me. Also for some odd reason it didn't like my ATI all-in-wonder. Works fine with WinTV though.

Wink My HTPC - PVR/DVR

I've done this 2003 and still have my 3rd box I've built box up and running with SAGETV just for recording first run tv shows. Then I use the Hauppauge MediaMVP to watch it on the TV. I could either way and hook up the PC to TV also. To explain more I have post sticky on a tech site explains more with pictures...

Pretty much like mine but I got 3 Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-500 cards. I'm thinking to get the Hauppauge Media MVP box. How's the playback on it? Nice and clear or choppy?

No it's smooth ... I was just watching Boston Legal on it.. You can have 24 of them wired and 12 wireless on your network. Very easy to install and use. What I did I changed the GUI and made it better.

Check out here for new Free GUI for MediaMVP by me..

Recorded Video Media

or

TV Playback

Even with this.. Wired MVP now wireless using Wireless Ethernet Converter

I had order two of test from the online store on ebay for $41 bucks. Eventhough the company was asking $43 and is still doing it..

This was made for the Heilus Media Company but they have RF out as you can see in the below images. So if you have a 13" CRT with no video inputs you could use it the MVP with it.. I got 7 MVPs total now for each tv on different floors.. If you want to can get this one at:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Hauppauge-Media-...ayphotohosting

Otherwise its $89 and up and the Wireless $149. But you might get luckly and find it for less...

Ok I'm having a problem with the sagetv, when it comes time to test the tv card the whole progam fails and needs to close. I have tried reinstalling the card and updating the drivers and its still does it? Wintv operates fine, although I do not have it open while trying to configure sagetv.

Wintv PVR 150
EDIT. Nvidia automated support just said my video card was an 8500GT.

amd athlon 64 3200+
1gig memory
win xp sp2
100gig HD just for this project.

Which version of SAGETV are you using? I still run 5.92 as it working and I not going to bother to change it. To me what works don't touch... Do you have the same version I do? You can't run both WinTV2000 and SAGETV you can to choose which one you want to use?

It says 5.0.4.92.

It turns out the program that controlls the remote controll that came with the card was causing all the fuss, I forgot that loaded on startup.

Would it be because its a trial version I cant burn what Im recording?

The only program that will open the saved files is sage itself. It wont open in anything else.

I also cant burn what I got too, that was kinda the main idea in all of this to capture, record and burn?

Is there any way to get this stuff on a dvd player?

Tried it with Nero express and nerovision express se, current versions.

Great info none the less, the live tv option is much better then the wintv.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: The files just started working in windows media player.. strange.
