Question wireless in da house?

hello all,
i was wondering if it is possible to set up wireless internet access within my home. i never thought about until i was trying to update my home theater equipment and had to keep running up and down the stairs to the computer. i have a dsl modem hooked to my main pc now. i have a laptop and ps3 both with wireless. what are my options here and what will i need to purchase? nothing too fancy or over the top cost wise, just something to get me by at home. thanks for your help!!

Should be easy as a wireless router hooked up to the main pc. You might want to consider a directional antennae unless you want to become the wireless hotspot in your neighborhood.

You only need to buy a wireless router and plug it to your existing modem, I use Linksys and cost me arround $100 USD more or less....

You can also set up an encripted password for your home network to avoid that...

As long as you setup WEP and make sure that you do not broadcast the SSID you will be ok with the wireless.

At Office Depot you can find many choices of wireless routers... I recomend the Lynksis, no very expencive and works great.

If you connect 2 computers at the same time the speed should be the same, only if you connect lets say 4 or more at the same time maybe it would slow down the speed.

P.S I hope you can understand my english writing.. lol.

Now's a good time of the year to pick one up...I just set up a wireless network for someone last week actually. Picked up a Linksys standard 802.11g router from Walmart for $50. Just hook your modem up to the WAN port on the router, cycle power to the modem, then hook the computer directly to the router.

Go to your web browser and type 192.168.1.1. There is no username, and the password is admin. Head to the Wireless tab, then click Wireless Security.

The easiest and most practical security for your situation is probably WEP..you pick a HEX value 10 digits long (something like AABBCCDDEE...can use any numbers 0-9 and letters a-f). Save that, then you can hop on your laptop and view available wireless networks. Throw in the password you set, and you're good to go.

This was all off the top of my head, but that's the gist of it.

a thought... the wireless g router will only let you connect at 54 mbs. it is the old standard. the new wireless n will let you connect at 100, the same as a wired lan. it will cost you about 100 bucks tho. but it will be one less thing to upgrade in the future.

you might check to see what kind of adapter your laptop and ps3 have, if it is n, on either of them, I would get the n router.
