Excellent essay on synthetic & regular oil, and lubrication etc.
Well worth a read. The guys seems to know his stuff.
My Chrysler mechanic neighbour is a firm believer in synthetic oils and doesn't change his oil for a year. He uses some special industrial synth oil ( as opposed to the retail stuff ) . He doesn't even change the filter, only feels if it's cold or hot. If the filter is cold, then he replaces the oil filter and tops up with more synthetic.
If the oil filter is cold, it means that the filter is plugged and it uses an internal bypass valve, so that although the oil is unfiltered, the engine and oil pump will not be starved.
I don't necessarily believe all people should do this as I'm sure car manufacturer's will frown on it,. But I do believe that Synth oils should be "pushed" more for longer intervals, since they have a higher service able life.
very interesting, I wouldn't mind only changing my oil once or twice a year! He seems to have done some extensive research. I mean I went to a K&N air filter, which only has to be cleaned and re-oiled every 25k miles. So, why not have the same with oil, say 10k miles? Just wonder how true it all is....
