Just got my Winston Cup Scene. That Sterling has held on to first at this point shows just how good he and his team are.
Are you guys ready for this :
Rule changes since the season started :
January - Ford rear spoiler height decreased from 6 1/2 in. to 6 1/4 in.
After qualifying, Ford was allowed to take another 1/4 in. off the spoiler.
After the 125-mile qualifying races, Ford was allowed another 1/4 in. drop.
March - the reference line for Chvey was moved to the same as Ford & Dodge. This made the Chevy 1 1/4 in. longer than before. Ford also was allowed to adjust the rear spoiler again by a 1/4 in. They were allowed to reduce it for the Daytona race (July) by another 1/8 in.
May - Nascar decided to change the maximum bore size for race engines. It only affected Sterling Marlin & Jimmy Spencer who would have 60 illegal engines as of July when the change would go into effect.
Mid June - Pontiac gets an 1/2 in. on the front air dam and a 1/4 in increase in rear spoiler height.
August - Nascar rules a 12.5 gallon tank used in place of the regular 22 gal tank at Talladega. Chevy gets to extend front air dam by 3 1/2 in. forward of the front bumper. A 1 inch increase for Michigan and Darlington. This was made permanent Sept 5.
Pontiac also gets a nose job for these tracks with an additional 1/2 in increase on the front end.
Nascar also doesn't rule out additional changes for Gm & Ford.
No changes for Dodge.
Geez, I thought by now they'd make Dodges run 6/7 Cylinders for the remaining races.
I can see why sponsors are having some creditibility problems with Nascar.
I also hear it all the time that Nascar is 'Tainted' and defending that argument gets harder all the time.
So all in all Sterling has been incredible depsite Nascar and that he still holds first place is a credit to his and the teams' talents.
If he wins another race or two, watch and see what happens to the Gm teams - Mainly Jeff Gordon, Jimmy Johnson and Tony Stewart. Not too concerned about Mark Martin. If he gets in first then we'll also see rule changes for the Gm teams.
Looks like it's a Gm year if Nascar has anything to do with it.
God, what if Dale Jr. was in the running for the championship ???
Can't imagine what changes they'd come up with.
It's even worse in the Truck series.
