County roads..... and county "maintenance"

The drive to pick up a friend from work today was interesting..... there were no grandmas in the left lane nor were there any crazy rednecks out but there was a road crew that was installing a new culvert in the road today.

So my route is blocked and I have to make a detour..... and I'm a bit low on fuel. I make a detour onto another county road and to my surprise, it's paved, it's not paved well (it's a gravel base, and a THIN one at that, pot hole city!) but there are these scary looking bridges......

The first bridge I come to from a distance, looks like it had failed, so I stop and have a look. It is solid in two narrow strips just wide enough to get a 1 ton truck through. About a mile down, there is another just like it. It is built well but very narrow. There is no guard rail.

Back to the low on gas thing..... when I got to the gas station, the EVIC said I had 8 miles till empty BUT I only pumped 14 gallons of fuel. The margin of safety is a bit big. I drove gently into town to save gas, but at the same time, didn't hold up traffic. The EVIC said I got 32mpg on the last run.... not bad!

On the way back we discovered that yet another cattle truck took my favorite turn too quickly and COVERED the highway with MANURE. YUCK! My car smells like shit now......

I went back to the site where the culvert was being installed...... it's in now BUT there is a HUGE mound up where it has been installed. I'm now worried about my friend coming in tonight...... his low, short car may get high centered on it, it's that big!

I'll let you know if his Hyundai makes it over the hump. :p
I wonder if the Jetta my other buddy has will make it..... if the Hyundai makes it, we will try his car next.

If we high center a car on this new "repair", someone is getting a nasty call.

Man, some repair, huh? I've never heard of someone getting high-centered on-road, lol.

I heard from a friend that a seam in a state road around here buckled so bad in the summer sun that cars were bending wheels and getting airborne (albeit slightly) after hitting it. CRAZY!

I wondered about the EVIC's "miles to empty" margin of error. On the way home from Carlisle I was 25 mile from home and the EVIC said 33 miles to empty. I did not want to chance it so I got the expensive gas on the Ohio Turnpike. I wonder if it would hurt anything to run it out and see what would happeh, then throw in a 5 gallon can of gas I would carry?

The engine could go lean and foul/melt a plug or the fuel pump may be damaged. It's rare to have damage when you run out of fuel, but occasionally, it happens.

The Hyundai Accent made it over the hump...... next up to try is the lowered Jetta! We have a tractor if it gets stuck! :p
