Ever heard of window exploding/breaking on its own?

Hey just writing because of a strange incident today. I had just finished washing my special when I went in the house and 15mins later my gf walked in and said that my parents 97' concorde driver window was smashed. So I went out to take a look and there it was all in pieces. Now the window was slightly rolled down but the whole thing was shatter even the pieces at the bottom. Neighbours were out at the time and no one seemed to see anyone near the car ect... as to thinking someone was breaking in. Now in the morning my sister locked the keys in the car and had a tow truck guy open the car but he couldn't get it to work on the drivers side but managed the passenger side. Could he have put a stress on the window trying to open it and then the car sitting in the sun for the rest of the day (it was really hot today) cause it to break on it's own? Just a thought otherwise I guess it must been some kids ride by and smash it with their hands cause there was nothing inside or outside the car like rocks ect...
So, just thought I would see if anyone has heard of a window breaking on it's own.
Thanks

It could have gotten stressed if the tow guy got it crooked in the track. That with the increase in heat as the day progressed, might just have done it. Could also be somebody got a new BB gun for their birthday.

It's been awhile and my memory isn't exactly clear on this, but my windshield cracked (not shatter) one a really hot day. I believe the wife and I went inside for like 2 minutes, just to grab something before leaving again and came back out and the windshield had a crack in the top right corner.

hmm... I live in the desert and my sisters windshield has something like that... the 98 sable she drives had a little crack in it because of a rock hitting it.... the way it is parked now, it is in the sun all day and one day the crack just got a lot bigger on a really hot day (around 115-120)... now she has a crack that goes all over the wind shield from the top left corner to the middle right side makes a turn and goes to the bottom of the left corner.... other then that I have never heard of windows exploding because of the heat... and we got lots of that here...

Hmmm thanks for the replies guys. Ya its always possible about the BB gun, but I just figured too many people were outside around it. I guess it is a good chance it was the heat / stress maybe from the guy trying to open it. I just had never seen / heard of it before.

It happened to me twice. Once in the Pocono's due to the pressure and the cooling of the night while it sat in the parking lot, the rear just shattered. The hotel said it happens a lot in the mountains. Insurance covered it.

It also happened the rear windshield once in the garage all closed up due to the heat. My friend (a bodyman) told me it was due to the little keepers that they use to hold the glass in place around the edge. Sometimes the points poke the glass edge and just shatter it. The dealer replaced free of charge.

It was probably the heat combined with an imperfection in the glass.

Happened in my house. Glass door going out onto my deck. The glass just shattered. I wasn't there, but my wife said there was a loud pop and the whole window shattered. It was safety glass like a car so it all stayed together.

If you scratch tempered glass, any kind of heat stress will cause it to break. Maybe your tow truck guy scratched the the drivers door window with whatever tool he was using to open the door.

Late 1970s Dodge stretch vans, the ones with the wrap-around glass in the back corners, were famous for blowing those windows out 'for no reason'.

just great.... you speak of the devil for 5 minutes and he takes a big dump in your lab... my parents are gone to Germany since Saturday... on Monday I decide, wow, let's take my dads Windstar out of the garage and put my Trp in it.... great... I have a shaded parking lot for the next 3 weeks... I park the van on the drive way behind the garage infront of my mums car, with the back to the garage, so the windshield faces the street.... yesterday morning I want to take the van, to do some food shopping and buy me some water, when I sit down and look through the windshield, bam!....I see a titch like 3 inch above the bottom of the windshield on the passenger side and a big ass crack going right through it going all the way to the middle of the drivers side up to about half high on the windshield.... looks extreamly like a BB gun... of course I got no proove for nothing and im gonna talk to the insurance guy now, to see if they would cover something like that.... or if im stuck with it, which would mean, that my head would most likely loose its attachment to my body in 3 weeks when my parents get back...

I freakin hate children... I wonder if the insurance would cover dents in my car from kids heads hitting it around 60 mph on the front bumper...:S
