Not Trep, but still a kill...

Well, continuing my run of kills not in the Trep-- just every other beater I drive-- frustrating...every time I get in to one of these situations its not in the Trep... oh well...

Its the winter-beater 85 Cutlass Ciera diesel, of all cars; driving this compared to the Trep is like going from a 08 Bentley to a 86 Ford Escort....until some "adjustments" are made....

I had the Cutlass in the garage repairing an exhaust leak. Got that done with some spare time. Being a non-electronic diesel, performance adjustments are simple and free. I decided to increase the housing pressure in the injection pump, and advance the timing--among other things--for the hell of it-- basically giving me lots of extra power-- have a 30 foot one-wheel peel mark in front of my house as a result-- which would be tough with the engines' original HP rating of 85 and 176 ft lbs torque--

Anyways, after the adjustments were done, I took her for a test drive, just to mess around. I ended up on the highway, in heavy traffic, with some toolshed in a Dakota R/T riding my ass--just a few feet from my bumper. Im already doing 75 in a 65, so Im not going any faster and risking an encounter with Ohio's flying donuts. I decide to head back home and get off at an exit. This guy gets off the same exit. I get in the far left lane of a 2 lane left turn lane. He's in the right lane. Light turns green, we take off; he accelerates ahead of me and then slows down quick and gets back behind me. Hes still rolling about 3 feet from my rear bumper. We get to the next light, another left turn, to another 4 lane road, and as soon as the turn is complete, he whips around on my right side about an inch from my rear bumper and floors it. Its 1pm, the Cutlass is turned up, so I say f*** it and floor it. She downshifts and then pure thick black smoke starts billowing from my tailpipe (like the tractor pulls) and I watch her overtake the Dakota by three car lengths; look down, and my Canadian speedo is buried at 140kms (84mph).

After all that, we end up at a stop sign. He's turning left, Im turning right. He rolls down his window and I roll down mine; and he asks me whats under the hood. I said you just got owned by a diesel with 85 HP== he's in disbelief, and says meet me at the Sunoco just down the road. So I meet him there, and show him the 85 4.3L diesel Cutlass that just whooped his R/T Dakota. This was new years eve, and for the kill he ended up buying me a couple at the bar in disbelief, and considered trading his Dakota for a diesel Ram....

At any rate, awesome kill for the Cutlass, I never knew she had it in her. I have since tuned her back down from fear of engine damage. Heres a pic of her just for emphasis:

The diesel in the cutlass was a more rarer engine. That's actually a really cool combo, if you think about it. (i've never driven/seen one, but I can only imagine how cool it would be to have a diesel in an American passenger car.)

My father drives a Mercedes 250SD, which is a diesel, and it's a cool experience. You just have to watch for pieces of gum at the stoplights, because if your tire gets stuck on a piece of gum you'll have to get out and push the car to help the engine get 'er rolling.

Yeah, there were about 2,500 made in 85. 4.3 V6 is very rare now, even rarer is the 4.3 V8 they had in the early 80's. Better constructed and much more reliable than the notorious 5.7. I stumbled across this one sitting in a back yard in Ontario. After a few repairs from sitting awhile its been a good strong running car, well taken care of. Very fun to drive when you turn it up. Still has good power and acceleration (if youve ever driven one of these with a 3.1L gas V6 very similar) on the factory settings.

Ive driven a couple of those Mercedes, and they definitely are a neat (but slow) car to drive. I was looking for one when I found the Cutlass. It was either that or a Peugeot (sp?) diesel wagon, which needed alot more TLC.

I get alot of strange looks pulling up to the diesel pump in this grocery getter-- and get alot of questions about the way it sounds.

Its amazing the power you can get out of a diesel with simple adjustments; Ive got a Ram diesel that I have been able to do similar things with. Ive been thinking of getting rid of everything I have that runs gas and going all diesel-- especially after filling up the Cutlass and not having to do it again for 3 weeks, or about 45 MPG.
