Dodge challenge: Sell muscle car to young and old

From the Detroit Insider:

Dodge challenge: Sell muscle car to young and old
Eric Morath / The Detroit news

The Dodge Challenger SRT8, a baby-boomer dream machine, is intended to fill a dual role for Chrysler LLC: bring those who drove the original back to showrooms and serve as a lighting rod to attract younger drivers to the brand.

A hit muscle car that appeals to both ends of the age spectrum could help reshape the Dodge brand from a truck builder with some basic sedans, to the performance-oriented mass market brand that Chrysler desires.

"For those of us who are baby boomers it rouses old feelings and harkens back to those days in the 1960s and 1970s," said Chrysler Chairman and CEO Bob Nardelli. "I also think there is a whole new generation that probably heard about this (car) and Woodstock, but now they can experience it."

He said the Challenger is emblematic of the company's wider strategy of appealing to multiple audiences with the same vehicle. For example, he said the new Dodge Journey crossover appeals to appeals to younger drivers who like the styling and functionality and to families that need the space and fuel-efficiency.

To hammer home the company's "old is new again" message, Chrysler brought motorcycle builders and TLC cable channel stars Paul Teutul Sr., 58, and Paul Teutul, Jr., 33, from Orange County Choppers, on stage during the Challenger premier. The father-and-son combo argued about who the car appealed to more.

The same debate could happen with a number of families, said Karl Brauer, editor-in-chief of Edmunds.com.

While the baby boomers continue their love affair with the muscle car, younger buyers want the vehicle too.

The Challenger's exploding popularity online suggests that a younger audience is interested in the car -- not surprisingly because high school students consistently pick muscle cars as what they would want to drive, Brauer said.

"More than 1950s cars or street rods, muscle cars are the vehicles that bridge generation to generation," he said.

Chrysler will truly tap into that interest for the first time since the late 1970s when the Challenger hits show room floors this spring, Brauer said.
"This is long over due," he said. "This is their heritage. It basically looks like the original expect with 19-inch wheels and few smoothed lines."

No Shit. Plus it burns 92 octane. and with the dealer mark ups. I know alot of high schoolers with $50.000 in the bank (NOT). And with no V-6 until 2009 models. And being $5,000 or more than V-6 Mustangs. I don't think they are going to sell alot of them. And with GM's Camero coming out with there own V-6 and V-8 in 09 or so. And the Ford will have their 2nd gen Mustangs out. With the new Boss V-8's with 400+ hp. And Hyundai with their new 300 hp Pony car coming out too. Its going to be alot of cars for that limited market share.

Mine 2012 Black Challenger SXT. Hers 2005 Red V-6 Mustang, the Son 1997 Red Plymouth Breeze

Remember that the pricing is for the full on SRT-8. Give it time and the dual displacement Hemi will be out, and the market (remember the P/T Crusier at first) will bring the price down.
In a year or so, they will probably be in the range of a Charger, or Magnum.

The problem with driving an expensive car to school is that there are some who wouldn't think twice about keying it.

Responsible young please, I dont want some 17 year old smashing into me with an SRT8. It would be an honor to be in an accident with a Challenger, but come on!

In any case, I wish I had 50K in the bank. Even if I did, Id much rather use it to pay for my College education. Ill worry about the Challenger when the current one is a vintage.

I think if there are kids with half a brain, they will stay many miles away from this POS.
If they use logic, they will look at the piss poor aerodynamics & weight distribution. The utterly obsolete 4 speed automatic with the V6 (that is like Chrysler launching the 'new' neon in 2000 with a 3 speed automatic)
Then they will look at the output of the 3.5 V6, only 250hp?! (if that is an accurate rating on mid-grade fuel)

They will say, 'I can get a used '04 VW R32 for 20K'
or go cheap, and get a beater '02 WRX for half that

9/11, still an inside job

Or some will realize this....250HP 3.5 was in the lighter LH....gets on autotrader.com and finds one for well under 10K with all the goodies. May or may not find DInet.

I don't get it Mike. They have a 6-speed auto for the 3.5.

Why in the hell would they keep using the 4-speed ???

Just doesn't make sense to me.

Who has a 6 speed auto?

Chrysler keeps on using the W5a580, where is the ratio spread there, that has only 5% more the the 42LE.

A 2000 Acura TL is as fast as any LH, the '02 Type-S will wipe the floor with any LH (unless you have a drag car with the prowler pro gearset)

Isn't the Genesis coupe coming? If the Genesis sedan 3.8 makes 295hp on premium, and hyundai is promising over 300hp, is it really that hard to generate an extra 10hp?
