Chrysler has high hopes for Dodge crossover

From the Detroit Free Press:

Chrysler has high hopes for Dodge crossover
By JIM IRWIN Associated Press Writer April 7, 2008

BIRMINGHAM -- As the economy slumps and gas prices rise, Chrysler LLC wants to remind consumers that cars can still be fun.

To that end, the automaker is launching a corporate advertising campaign featuring the tagline "If you can dream it, we can build it."

A similar theme -- "If you can dream it, do it" -- is at the heart of the ad campaign for Chrysler's Dodge Journey crossover, which went on sale in the U.S. in February.

The first all-new Dodge since Cerberus Capital Management LP acquired an 80.1 percent stake of Chrysler in August, the 2009 Journey is designed to stand apart from the growing pack of crossovers -- the market's fastest-growing segment -- with flexible seating and storage. The Journey comes standard with two rows of seats and an optional third row that allows seating for seven.

The crossover, which blends features of passenger cars and sport utility vehicles, will have a base price of $19,985. Its standard 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine gets 19 miles per gallon in city driving and 25 mpg on the highway.

With 70 percent of Journey buyers expected to be first-time buyers of a Chrysler product, the new crossover presents "a conquest opportunity for Dodge," said Mark Spencer, senior manager of communications for the division.

Dodge will dedicate a company-record 29 percent of its ad campaign to interactive programs targeted to two main groups: young singles and couples, and families with young children; and empty nesters aged 46 to 65. "Both are in a period of change and are optimistic about it," Spencer said.

In addition to online, television, print and movie-theater advertising, Dodge will become a sponsor of the U.S. Soccer Federation and the Journey will be the official vehicle of both the men's and women's national soccer teams.

The corporate ads carry a broader theme of responsiveness to the consumer, a point Chrysler hopes to underscore by creating a consumer advisory board.

The Journey ads debut this week and the corporate campaign begins next week.

The optimism of the new campaigns hasn't blinded Chrysler to the realities of the U.S. auto market. Chairman and Chief Executive Bob Nardelli said in March - when Chrysler sales fell by 19 percent from year-earlier levels - that the automaker has cut jobs and factory capacity and so it can get through a deeper slowdown.

Why not have high hopes?

It just won't turn out that well when reality sets in.

A crap powertrain won't cut it anymore.

Hey Mike isn't the 2.4 pretty much the same engine that Hyundai uses ?

If I remember correctly that thing was a joint venture and it seems kind of funny that you don't hear too much noise about the Hyundai version.

I haven't driven one so I can't really comment on it though if I were to buy a Journey I'd go with the 3.5

The 2.4 'world engine' is fine, it just NEEDS something WAY better than an obsolete four speed automatic.

People need to adjust to reality. Front wheel drive and a 175hp I4 engine is enough. It will propel this vehicle over 100mph easily, heck it can cruise at 100mph.

Cue the double clutch. 5,9,13,17,21,25 mph/1K
30,55,80,105,125(okay that is wishful thinking, ie downhill with a tailwind, otherwise 115),110mph
What is Edmunds problem?

the 3.8 will thrust that van just fine, just don't expect it to have top end power (keep it to 4000rpm at most)

9/11, still an inside job

I agree i just bought a 2009 Hyundia Sonata Limited 2 weeks ago. It has the 175-hp 169-tq 2.4 I4 motor, with the 5 speed tranny. It is a very quite motor. You don't hear it, unless you get above 4,000 rpm's. It's very good on gas, so far 28.7 mpg. It seems to have very good power. It only has 500 miles on her. So another 700 miles before i can really open her up. I tested drove a couple of Avenger's. Not impressed!! Very cheap looking seats and dash. The 2.4 hooked up to the 4 speed auto was loud and felt under powered. The 3.5 R/T was much better with the 6 speed auto. But the wife wanted a 4 banger for MPG. Plus they wanted north of $25,000 for one. I got the Sonata limited for $21,425.03. Sorry Mopar but i can't seeing paying over $4,000 more. For a car with less options and less warranty.

You buy a lot of cars.

Is that 5 speed stick or 5 speed auto?

Geez Spook hate to see you levae Mopar.

Hey Mike - Why do you think Chrysler keeps such an odd mix of trannies. In some cars they still use the 4 speed auto when the have the 6 speed available. I don't get it; especially when fuel mileage is getting more important all the time. My neighbor is thinking about trading in his Grand Cherokee (which is his favorite vehicle. I mean the guy truly loves it) because of mileage.

Cerberus is going to gut Chrysler, or they are putting ALL their eggs in the aptly named Pheonix engines & dual clutch transmissions

I was hoping for only 5/6 speed autos for '09, but the craptastic base Challenger blows a hole in that theory.

Time for a hemi V6. Use the big bore of the 6.1, for a 4.5 liter V6 (315hp, 330ft-lbs for trucks, 330hp, 315ft-lbs cars) to replace the 4.7 V8, which I still believe is overrated
perfect for contemporary use. People still associate V6=good milage (in relation to V8) and 'hemi'=power.

9/11, still an inside job

Does it use 5w-20 oil?

I just wish the axle ratio was shorter (or it had a 6 speed auto)

I hope that Hyundai makes it shorter so it can stay in the hunt with the 6 speed auto Malibu.

and those damn red turn signal (why Hyundai, why?)

I wouldn't run 5w-20 oil because it doesn't have a roller follower valvetrain.

Yeah, get rid of the Magnum but come out with the Journey which has 15 less hp (3.5L) gets about 2 mpg less, and has bland minivan-like styling. Makes alot of sense.
