Change of plan: No Kia or Hyundai pickup for U.S.

SEOUL -- Neither Hyundai nor Kia will sell a pickup in the United States in the near future.

Hyundai Motor Co. CEO Kim Dong-Jin said the board in “a recent decision” scrapped plans for a unibody pickup in the United States.

“Because of high oil prices, the light-truck market is declining significantly, so now is not the right time to produce a pickup truck,” he said at a media event here.

Kim said the plan was to build a mid-sized truck for Kia and Hyundai at Kia's new plant in West Point, Ga. “But we are forced to give up production of the pickup at the North America plant,” he said.

Sources say the truck would have been based on the redesigned 2010 Kia Sorento SUV. The Sorento, now a body-on-frame truck, will be converted to a unibody platform when the new version goes into production at the Georgia plant in November 2009.

The front-wheel-drive V-6 pickup was expected about two years after the Sorento.

Ahn Byung-Mo, CEO of Kia Motors America, discussed the truck with the Kia dealer council in February. He told dealers the company was considering models such as the Honda Ridgeline, a front-drive unibody mid-sized pickup.

The Sorento will be the first vehicle produced at Kia's Georgia plant. A car also will be produced at the plant. Kia sources say it likely will be the Optima.
Kim said a Hyundai car also could be built in Georgia.

He said: “We may produce a Hyundai car at the Kia plant if the platform is compatible.”

Very smart move indeed, pick ups are not going to sell well here from them. A lot of people are looking at more fuel efficient cars, and the people who are in the pick up market, seem to edge over to american picks ups [Ford, GMC].
