Post Nissan GT-R warranty disaster costs owner $20k

Browsing out and about on the Internet one comes across some pretty interesting posts from time to time. Fast forward to this morning. As I was reading my favorite leading automotive publication about the secret recorder (black box) Nissan installs in every vehicle to keep track of user behavior it hit me. What if they knew how many times I’ve stepped on the gas close to redline? Or how many times I’ve hit the redline in the past week or so. Is that grounds for warranty cancellation? How do I disable it? Hammer time?

One poor soul in Florida is out about $20k it seems because of the lack of support from Nissan for their new GT-R. The whole automotive community is shocked how Nissan could let this happen. It seems if you disable VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control) and launch the vehicle, you will be treated to a nasty suprise that might set you back $20k. The post below is from the owner:
I was driving my gtr two weeks ago and I heard a loud noise coming from the rear. I turned immediately had my gtr towed to crown nissan st. petersburg fl. They didn’t touch my car only called some techs from tennessee to look at the car and record the noise, 4 days later two guys from japan to download some info from the car then left. Then I get a call from the dealer to tell me the news, and they told me that the car was driven without vdc too much and nissan will not warranty the transmission which they said was destroyed, I asked them how much to fix it they told me 20k, no freaking way I will pay 20k on top of what i just paid for the car. I called the gtr number and also talked to nissan consumer affairs got nowhere, now the car is sitting at the dealer. I know we shouldn’t launch the car but why own it if you cant use this function, don’t sell a car that goes 0-60 in 3.4 sec if the only way you can achieve this speed is to void the warranty , false advertising. Here is the bad news people were fearing it has happened to me and Nissan has told me there are already three people in my shoes, if you are one of these people email me, we have got to get together on this. Just think if any of you guys have taken the vdc off just a few times you have already voided your warranty, good luck what a joke nissan.

I am suprised they even offer a warranty on a vehicle like that. The other thing that is kind of shocking is that the tranny blew up after only a few months. I know people at my high school are probably more abusive than this guy to their own POS Tauruses, Cavaliers, and the like and have yet to blow up a tranny.

This sort of thing should be required reading for anyone considering buying an import hi-pro car instead of a Challenger or Mustang. Say what you might about U.S. companies, a 2009 Challenger or Ford Mustang will have a good shot at being on the road a decade from now.
Another point: A replacement trans for my Freightliner with a 13 speed runs about $7,500 rebuilt, about double that new. So what's with a trans the size of a coffee maker, that's a bad mismatch for the power of the engine it's attached to costing $20,000.
Nissan needs to bite the bullet on this one, the recall all the effected vehicles and reflash the ECUs to limit power to something the trans can live with. After that if someone modifies their car the damage is one the owner, but you should not be able to blow a trans by pressing a button.

I don't like what large companies do to people, BUT, if that person can afford 74,000 on a car then they should be able to afford 20k on a trans. 0-60 in 3.2 sec and 1/4 mile 11.5 sec and 121 MPH. Faster than Viper, 911, and Z06. 74 MPH slalom speed, makes it second to the Viper. Stops from 60-0 in 98 feet and turns at .96 Gs.

In order to do that the driver has to go into "Launch Mode". Two switches have to be set to "Arm Mode", "VDC" off completely by holding down the "VDC R" button for a few seconds. Then hold the break down tight, and push the gas to the floor. When you get this sequence right, the computer holds at 4500 rpm. Let go of the break and hold on.

When I first got my '02 Trep, I pushed it as hard as I could. I was a kid with a new toy. But my toy had it's limiters in place. If I rechipped it and blew the trans, I don't think Chrysler would pay for it. Having to go through that many keystrokes every time you restart the car to overide the computer is about the same thing. If they reflashed it then it wouldn't beat the other cars and they wouldn't be able to sell it for 75k+. We in society need to have built in safeties to idiot proof everything we do. Too easy to blame someone else for our own irresponsibility. (sorry, that was the single parent coming out in me)

What's worse than a young kid with a pos car in school? An old kid that can afford more car. I do know that my friend's Z06 doesn't have mission control buttons to push to get it into "Launch Mode". Only one to push and that's the start button.

I love the G's. I would keep it in launch mode all the time to if I could. But then, there is no place in Michigan that I would want to get to that fast.

Better to let the car's prestige speak for it's self than to fail at trying to show someone. All cars are tested to their respective limits, but that doesn't mean you need to drive it that way all the time. Let the specs speak for themselves and if someone wants to step up once in a while, let em have it.

Could you imagine how he must have felt when he lost the trans in front of his friends/family/opponent (whatever the case may be)? You know he had someone with him probably showing off. I would be. But then I would be doing it to over compensate my short comings.

Were there warnings in the manual? Don't know what one is. Add gas, turn key, go, and have someone tell you what's wrong with it when something breaks. I'm sure there was warnings but who reads the manuals? There's warnings on a coffe telling me it's hot. I know how to drink coffe just as well as everyone knows how to drive.

I would still be pissed at Nissan.

Speaking of transmissions, I'm going to rebuild mine. 198,000 miles and the TC went out. Looking for mods and specific places to purchase. I've been looking on here for a week now and great people are telling me what can be done, but not what it improves, nor how much it costs, nor where to purchase. I'm a clueless newbie when it comes to mods. Come to think of it, I only know how to do one thing right and I am getting kind of sleepy. NAP TIME!

Just an FYI, the Viper ACR turned a 1:22.1 on the 'Ring recently, a full 16 seconds ahead of the GTR...

But the Car mags used the same way for their 1/4 mile runs. And Nissan did not say that Stop. It vaids your warranty. They just wanted the good 1/4 mile time's. Just like when they (Jap car Companies) over rated their car hp numbers for years. Why have a those perfomance options if you can't use them?

Actually they have been UNDER rating their cars for years due to a "gentleman's agreement". Ever noticed how so many Japanese sports cars were rated at 280 HP during the 90s into the early 2000s (RX-7, Skyline GT-R, Supra, 300ZX, etc.), yet they were still extremely quick.

Nope the other way around. Thats why the big 3 pushed for the new Cafe and hp ratings by the gov. Most Japanese cars lost 10 to 20 hp. Most american cars where the under rated ones. Like the Viper gained 25 hp and the Vette gained 30+ hp. Plus Japan car companies send in ringers for years. Special hand made motor ones with race oil ect... extras in them.
