1995 Caravan Problem

So I've been having problems with the van my grandma gave me this summer and I've been searching online through many various websites and not returning much luck so I've decided to come back to good old DI.net, I feel actually really bad for neglecting this site after death of the Trep... anyhow to the problem.

So on Sunday, my boyfriend used the van to go on a few errands and when he came back left the dimmer on all the way, I didn't go back out to the van for 4 more hours but in this extreme cold we've been experiencing killed off the battery. So I call over a friend to help me jump it, were I was parked we had to push the van backwards, When I put the van in Neutral to push it back I noticed the oil pressure light trying to come on, honestly, if it wasn't at night when this was going on I wouldn't have even noticed it, well I truly didn't think anything of it, anyhow after an hour of trying to jump it we just gave up, I go out and buy a new battery monday night after work, installed it and she started up like a charm after I let it sit on the charger for about an hour.

Today I was driving to work and twice this happened, the oil pressure light came back on, I lost the ability to accelerate, so i pulled over, shut the van off and turned it back on, and it was just fine. Coming back home I expected to experience the same issues but nothing happened instead right as I was pulling into the parking lot, good old check engine light came on, I decided to pull the codes and came up with...
12 - Which is the "Battery recently disconnected" Which doesn't bother me at all I expected that one to come but the shocker was
51 - Oxygen sensor stuck in lean position OR bad MAP sensor. now I'm thinking that might have been from earlier this summer as I haven't cleared the computer I had an overheating/smelling oil inside the car ordeal that I just blew off but then thinking this over since i replaced the battery wouldn't that have cleared the codes?

Please forgive me as my memory is lacking me lately, I haven't had to really worry about mechanics as after the Trep I bought an 04 Saturn Ion and haven't had to worry about problems until now (the Saturn is a whole different story) But I need some help as this is now the only vehicle I have available to drive at this present time!!

Thank you everyone!

Welcome (back) from a fellow Iowan!!!

So, the oil light comes on, and you can't accelerate... You said you have to shut the van off and re-start it. when you shut it off, is the engine already not running? it sounds like the van engine shuts off (when the oil light comes on), and then you turn the key back (not shutting off the engine as it is already shut off), and then re-starting it.

Could you confirm possibly that the engine is shutting off when you see the oil light on? If you have a tach on the dash, you'll see it fall to zero, that will tell you if the engine died. Also, you will loose power steering, you might notice that. You probably have the heater blower on, so turn that off and shut off the radio when this happens (all while not stopping the van or turning off the key), and see if you can hear the engine running. Report back.

When you report back, Please state what engine is in it, and other relative options that would help in diagnosing the problem.

Thanks! DI.net is the place to come, we'll get through this somehow.

(oh, and I'm just down Hwy 30 from you, to the east)

Well it's the base model, it doesn't have a Tach, real disadvantage to me, I'm going to presume that the engine is not cutting itself off as I still have power steering and all the electric works so I'm not sure, it just happened those 2 times tho, now I've just been fighting with the check engine light. It came on again today and I pulled the codes to see if there was anything new and it just gave me the same 12, 51, 55 so nothing new....

This might come as a stupid question but when you replace the battery or disconnect the battery does that clear the OBD codes that are stored?

Okay so I just pulled out the file for the van as this has just been my secondary vehicle prior to the Ion taking a crap on me... it's the 3.0L V6, Now keep in mind here that the van only has 49,500 on it. This van had barely been driven.
Flipping through the file and looking over some of the invoices, in 06 she took the van in, at this point it had 43,200, according the invoice grandma stated that the engine was surging when in park, their action, they merely checked for codes and said that it wasn't surging for them, (this is a familiar story, same thing happened to me with the trep, I wanted to punch the mechanic in the face thinking I was delusional, I have a problem with Stew Hansen). That's literally the only other known problem aside from this June I was running around in the van and I started to smell oil inside the van, within 3 seconds of my noticing the smell, the check engine light came on, and by the time I came back outside the light wouldn't come back on no matter how long I was driving it and running it, at this point in time I was under the impression that the van had OBD I not OBDII and didn't bother try pulling the codes.

Let me know if there is anything else I can maybe give you information wise to help you.
So how far down the Highway are you, other side of Boone? Closer to Carroll?

OBD I and OBDII will both give you codes... but I am NOT familiar with the 3.0 from Mitsu that Dodge used in those vans. I WILL say that I have never been a fan of them, and I will also say that most race guys loved them as they stood up to more abuse than other offerings from Dodge. Eh, who knows.

I wish I could give you better advice on this once... I'd almost still bet that the engine is shutting completely off, as electrical doesn't depend on the engine running (only the key in the right position and the battery charged), and power steering can feel 'o.k.' when driving when the engine dies, as when the van is rolling there is almost no need for power steering.. really, you only use power steering when you are driving under 15 miles an hour.

For re-starting the van, you might try just slipping it into neutral and turning the key to 'crank' or 'start', and then turning the key. If it grinds, then the engine is still running. if it cranks and starts, then you know it had died... but then you don't have to pull over, stop, and start the car, then start driving again.

I'm in Watkins, the first turn in after hwy 30 splits to 4 lane before going through Cedar Rapids... so other side of boone from you. A little more than 'just down the Hwy', but still...

Hey it all works out in the end, ya I wasn't a huge fan of this van to start with, my grandma just quit driving this summer and one day when I was visiting her she handed me the title and a check to transfer the title for her to my name. Can't decline a free vehicle and haven't really had much use of it till now. Just really annoying as my car is out of commission untill I get my tax return.

Either I keep getting stronger or I didn't lose power steering as the first time it died it pulled over very easily, that's what shocked me, I expected to lose the power steering but didn't. But as I said, It hasn't happened but those 2 times that it did the other day on the way to work. I'm not sure what else it could be unless I really was losing oil pressure due to a leaky gasket??? I dunno. Otherwise, maybe something going on with my O2 sensor, I'm clueless.

I'm not sure how I got east and west mixed up. I apologize, I've got my mind going a million places.

Merry Christmas, I was stuck out of state due to weather till today... just getting back into checking the board.

If it happens to you again, I would start looking at the Cam and Crank sensors maybe... An O2 sensor wouldn't cause an engine to die usually. and it may not toss a code. There are possibilities that it isn't engine related, but rather the ingnition switch at the steering wheel.

Let us know if the gremlins creep back up.
