92' Mercury Cougar 3.8L troubles.....

hey guys, long time no talk. I know this is a bit off topic here but i needed to post it somewhere i could get a quick response. I just bought my girlfriend an 92' Merc Cougar and kinda got ripped on the deal. Anyhow on her way back last night her headlights started going on and off, flashing, going off completely so on and so forth. If you play with the high beam (multifunction switch) and the headlight switch you can get them to come back on sometime for a split second or for a minute or two. I taught it would be the multifunction switch but i dont know for sure. I was wondering what you all taught about it?

Thanks a million!

Garage
Could be either, but I would suspect the high beam switch first as it cuts the low beams off when you hit it.

Do you still have your dash and running lights?

yup all the other lights work fine. It's only the headlights that it effects.

I'm pretty sure I'll know this one cuz I have a 90' T-bird supercoupe. Your cougar has the same parts that I have. I will tell ya u prob. want to look into a new one cuz junkyard ones it could happen again down the road. It is the pull-out switch on the left side of the dash for the lights to turn on. See if u take the black instrument cluster cover off just in front of the cluster. To get the knob off the switch to pull the cluster cover out u have to stick a small screwdriver in the hole that is on the knob itself. If u look there will prob. be a little pile of corrosion just below that pull-out switch. You have to unscrew the big nut on the front of it an then unplug it. Then put a new one in. If this is not the culprit, which sometimes there can be two its up by the headlights then. Theres a ground that overloads sometimes cuz of dirt and/or oldness of the connections. I would prob. try the the switch first tho cuz usually its the one at fault. All this from past experience.

I'm having more problems with the car. I was driving home from work and the car started smoking extremely bad it was antifreeze. I popped the hood and noticed there was antifreeze all over the engine bay, it wasn't coming from the bottom side of the head it was more towards the intake plenum what do you think it could be? Just an intake gasket or am i looking at something worse?

It's most likely the head gasket. I had a 89 T-bird 3.8V-6. All the Ford 3.8s had a design problem and eventually blew the gasket. If you were the original owner and had low mileage Ford would do a "Quiet Warranty" and fix it. I was the second owner and the car had 58k. Ford wouldn't recompensate me after it cost me $900. The heads warped, etc.
There was a Class Action Suit filed against Ford ,which I was in on, but was excluded from because I was not the original owner.
