Dirty Air Filter= Almost No Effect on Fuel Economy?

This is from the report from the EPA.

Report here:
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/pdfs/...02_26_2009.pdf

I'll still change mine though.

Garage
Interesting. Having a plugged or severly clogged air filter might not effect economy that much, but isnt good for the rest of the engine.

That is why they work so much better when you put an open air filter on them!

Try breathing through a painters mask it takes more effert to breath, than without it on.

So if your engine has to "pull' more to get the same amount of air ...then it is less efficent, may be not

by much, but none the less .

If you aren't using full throttle, a loaded air filter usually leads to better fuel mileage.

it's only a matter of time till another research group comes in and proves that clean air filters give better efficiency. I do like that fact that the EPA is putting our tax money to good use by researching whether dirty air filters provide better fuel economy. I'm sure spending money to identify the risks of pharmaceutical companies dumping drugs into our water is utterly wasteful.....

The EPA is worse the the SEC who couldn't figure out the whole Madoff thing despite receiving complaints years ahead of the scandal.

Only downside I can see... To much dirt/dust, and it will eventualy pass through the filter in chunks and can damage the engine over time... Dirt and grit + intake/exhaust valves = bad...

No, the SEC was part of the scam.

This EPA study was probably one of those $1 million earmarks that they stick in a bill when they pass a budget in the gov.
