2000 Dakota, Any good?

I noticed a 2000 Dakota at the dealer down the street and was curious if it would be worth my time? They were closed so I didnt get any numbers but I looked it over as best I could. Its a v8 Magnum (which apparently could be either 4.7L or 5.9L?), 5spd (a Must for me), 2wd, lowered in the front, I didnt see any rust or obvious major damage. Its also my favorite Metallic Blue. They havnt even cleaned the old fast food trash out of it yet. KBB says it should be going for 3-5K, I'd be game at the low end of that so this might be a possibility.

I'm looking for a reliable daily driver thats not a complete pita to wrench on. I'm looking at trucks so that I can toss all my Intrepid parts in the back and not worry about messing up my carpets. Obviously brand loyalty could be a factor but honestly I dont care as long as it gets the job done. What do you guys think, should I go back and ask some questions or keep looking for something else?

2000 could be the 318 or the 4.7...318 is definitely the better animal...if its the 5.9 it would be the R/T dakota....only thing I really remember going on those was the fuel pumps, 4.7 is alittle worse, less power, had a few timing chain issues, nothing terrible like the 2.7 or anything.

My son and I both own Dakotas. Both are '02 models. Mine is a 3.9 with a 5 speed and my sons is an R/T with the 5.9 and auto. Both have been very reliable with few problems...as mentioned in an earlier post...both have had upper ball joints replaced but both sets were replaced under warranty. The 3.9 averages around 20mpg the 5.9 not so good at around 14. Friends that have the 5.2 with 5 speed say they average about the same as my 3.9. If your interested in a good reliable hauler-check it out!

Pretty much what Dan said.

The 5.9 was only available in the Dakota/Durango R/T versions. The 5.2 was a much better engine. huge efficiency difference, plenty of power still, and freakin reliable as hell. But they are harder to find.

The 4.7 feels weak to me. I had thought about Dakotas for my first car, but decided against it when I couldnt find any good 5.2s.

I would ask 98Corde over on LHf. Im pretty sure he just bought a 5.2 Durango thats a 2000.
