Why does he say it is bad? Could very well have low compression on that cylinder, and not smoke enough to know that it is bad...

Haven't dealt with one of them motors much from a 99 Explorer body, but you might find out how it is known to be bad. If it is low compression, you can do a few other things with it to find out where the compression is going, then decide from there if it is worth fixing. I'm guessing head gasket, personaly.

Wet, or dry 50 pounds? Need to do a leak down test on it to see where the air is going, but I'm guessing that it needs a head gasket and wouldn't hurt to lap the valves while you have it apart - but the leak down test will confirm that.

So, you gonna do the work?

Cool. Sneak down there and snap some pics of the swap if you can. Glad you've got a line on a motor and someone to service it for ya.

Just some guy in a garage at his house, or a shop? MOST shops won't touch the swap you're talking about, mostly out of ignorance... but guys in home garages would likely eat that up!

The 2.7-3.x swap for you - have you already talked to them about it?

heh, IMO motor swaps are either pass or fail - but nice to use that as the test rig, and not your own car. Because the swaps aren't in the regular shop manuals, you may have trouble getting the shop to do the work for you. Good luck with it though, there are a few shops that will.

If you've got a cherry picker though, the swap at home isn't that hard to do, and will save you some serious dough.
