Chrysler's Ad Cutbacks

DETROIT — Sluggish economic numbers at the Chrysler group have led BBDO Detroit, the automaker's lead advertising agency, to eliminate 100 positions at its office in Troy, Mich.

Employees at BBDO Detroit, a division of Omnicom Group, learned of the job cuts Thursday morning. The move is part of a cost reduction and restructuring plan at Chrysler that includes its ad agency and suppliers, a BBDO spokesman said.

The cutbacks affect roughly 5 percent of the BBDO office’s staff of nearly 2,000 who work on creative and media accounts for DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler group. All departments are affected.

The spokesman said: “It's a response to difficult economic conditions and cost pressures within the auto category.”

Wow, I had no idea they ran such a STUPID ad. I mean come on, you dont sell American bravado while praising the nation we pimp-slapped in WW2.

During times of war, like now, patriotism runs high. Its not a great time to praise where your car comes from. Remember the campaign in the early 90s where Nissan, Honda, and Toyota emphasized that they had US assembly plants?

A lot of people buy American cars because theyre American.

Its rather arrogant for DC to run these kinds of ads. They say to the consumer "Yeah, we stole your #3 automaker, ripped off your investors, and shoved our parts into every new car. You couldnt do it so we had to save your American ass."

Huge turnoff.
