1988 Ford Thunderbird Turbocoupe

Well, my dad used to have one of these cars, and I really liked it. I was just curious if anyone knows if there is a big aftermarket for these cars or no?

Not as far as I've seen. But turbo parts are pretty generic...

If I am not mistaken the turbo coupes are the 2.3L turbo motor. I think there's a little cult following behind it...

Is that the same motor as the Mustangs?

I saw an early 90's T-bird the other day, he floored it when he saw that I wasn't a real cop. Man that was fast! Couldn't tell if it was the turbo or the sc 3.8, but it sure had a loud whine to it.

I had an '83 Turbocoupe with a 5 speed. Loved that car. That little 4 banger MOTIVATES that big car.

There is a somewhat large following for those cars. The SuperCoupes generally have more aftermarket support, but there is stuff there for the TurboCoupes.

There is a large following, especially for the TC cars. The "Sport" optioned Birds are more valuable as far as money is concerned, but the TC got all the aftermarket attention. The 2.3's can be built to handle well over 500hp if done right,. I know a lot of people running 15-18 psi with steel-ringed heads. The TC was built from 1983-1988. In 1989 the SC was rolled out. Supercharged 3.8 would get up and move, but head gaskets were a major issue. I've owned plenty of 87-88 Birds, but only one of them was a TC. I've opted to have the same suspension and interior as the TC, but with a 5.0 under the hood. Funny thing is, the TC produced 35 more hp than the same year stock 5.0 in the Birds! One of the first things I always did was to ditch the non-HO motor and drop in a "Stang" motor....most of mine were modified and/or stroked.

If ya want more info, give me a shout! I can tell ya just about anything you want to know about the "Aero-Birds"....you can even click on my link in my sig to see my last Bird....

Yes, it's the exact same motor as the Mustang SVO, and also the Merkur XR4Ti...

Had to be an SC...the last year for the turbo was 1988...

i.e. you can make 800+ hp out of a Cavalier engine but you'll have to replace the crank, rods, pistons/rings, heads, cams - pretty much everything exept the block.

But long term reliability?

Not "any" engine.
