Dull styling, price hobble sales of GTO

Here's a headline from Automotive News. Sorry I couldn't get the whole article.

The Pontiac GTO, a pet project of General Motors product czar Robert Lutz, is off to a slow start. Dealers say the GTO - touted as a halo car for Pontiac - suffers from bland styling, a high sticker price and no incentives. So far this year, Pontiac has sold just 2,451 units. Discounting seasonal differences, that amounts to an annualized rate of 7,300 units - well below Pontiac's 16,000-unit target.

From the same article:
A December launch slowed sales of the Australian-built car, says Pontiac spokesman Jim Hopson. "Winter probably isn't the best time to launch a rear-wheel-drive vehicle," he says. "However, we're already beginning to see sales pick up with the nice weather."

Pontiac sold 719 GTOs in March and 650 in April.

Some of the dealers here don't want you to take a test drive and have marked up the price. No wonder they're selling slow.
I hate it when they bump the price.

Too damn heavy. I'd go for a Mach1 or Cobra, unless I want European quality interior.

Since it has no style, then people would be buying it for performance. And if performance is all you want, why not an F-body then? Both WS6 and SS are faster.

Low supply and you get low sales.

Where are all of them? The most I've seen any GM dealer have is one.

Actually, I'm pretty sure the Cobra and GTO are very similar in weight. I think it goes to show how lame America has become as far as driving is concerned. A car like that can only be sold on a limited basis in a niche market, so it's too expensive. The people who have that kind of money to spend buy BMW's and Mercedes. The young people they need to get excited about the car can't afford it. So, it stays a low volume niche car. It is just a catch-22, vicious circle type thing.

What they need to do is bring it down to the Mustang and F-body level. Strip it down some, get rid of expensive luxury options, and have available a version of it for well under $25,000, keeping the same powertrain. Or, just bring back the rough-riding, creaky, poorly assembled, uncomfortable, cheaply made F-body plastic-mobiles to get back into the market segment.

I have yet to see one on the road, which is very surprising for Southern California where everybody is so anxious to have the first new thing on the block. It looks like a rental car to my eyes.

Sounds like the Pacifica, only substitute the average american family with a kid or two in the place of the excited young kid.

I've actually seen a few. But to someone who doesn't know what they are looking at wouldn't even realize its not a Grand Prix or similar "everyday" car.

Read the article. Supply is currently almost three times more than what is average.

Exactly.... Which is actually the reason why Chrysler is going to sell alot of the LX cars. Because it's something totally different.
