2006 Chrysler Sebring Convertible - 2.0 seized...

Hi there!

So if you read my thread about how to repair your window motors, you know I'm working on a 1999 Alfa Romeo 156 T-Spark 1.8L with a friend, mostly to learn more about engines, inner working, heavy repairs, etc... We don't want to stop there and our next goal is to work on V6 (Sebring or 300M 2.7L maybe as there is ONLY ONE INTREPID on sale in the entire country), later.

Anyway, I found this on the French Craigslist-like "The Good Spot": http://www.leboncoin.fr/voitures/452367574.htm?ca=12_s

The seller should send his title by email tomorrow so I can get more info on the car (VIN mostly).
Here is what he said by email:
Engine is 2.0L, manual tranny. Camshaft seized, mechanic said to swap the engine or maybe change the cylinder head. There was a problem with the oil pressure light on the dash, oil changes always made on time but there was a leak without the light coming up, timing belt broken
Believe me I tried to get it making some sense because his French is worse than my German may be... Add SMS language to that...

So for now I don't know if it's a SOHC or DOHC engine. The car is suposed to be from 2006, a Sebring Convertible manual tranny with 126'000 km (78'750 miles) on it.
I guess the oil pump is dead, which could have cause the engine to seize. About the leak I'm not even sure if it's right... The 2.0L is an interference design so valves (and pistons maybe) will be dead...

Do you know how much it could cost (no labour, just parts) to repair this?
What are the main causes of engine seizures on the 2.0L SOHC or DOHC, is it common?
Do you think it's worth towing the car from Calais to my place 350km/220m?
Should we wait until the next "singing timing chain" 2.7L?

Thought Sebring had 2.4, 2.7. Maybe 2.0 is Euro spec??

Yes I think so. VIN : 1C3ELN5Y44N384872
VIN Decode.net states it's a 2004 2.0L.
This web site says it's a 2.0L DOHC.

Are seizures common on the 2.0L DOHC? I remember I had a 2.0L SOHC in my first 1998 Neon and it ran great even if it was about 200'000 miles old...

Looks like its a very early 07. They put the Caliber 2.0 in the Avengers and Sebring. Very thrashy motor, not a big fan. Even when healthy they have alot of lifter tick at idle, not the best sounding thing in the world for an OHC motor.

I haven't heard too many horror stories about the GEMA 2.0. My grandfather has one in his Caliber and it seems as if it runs well. Its a completely different motor than your old Neons 2.0, this one is mostly Hyundai designed. I would try a Caliber forum, you would have much more luck about the issue over there.

Ok... Thanks for the info.

We found another Sebring Convertible, a 2001 2.7L. Doesn't start, engine isn't seized up but doesn't turn well... The seller managed to get it running once and noticed smoke coming out of the oil filling plug (forget the good word for it, damn). I don't think we could do anything with it without an engine swap anyway.
