00 Grand Prix GTP (O/T)

There's been some talk of the GTP's on here, and a bunch of you seem to know about them so I have a question.

My g/f has a '00 Grand Prix GTP (3.8sc) and it makes this whining noise, sometimes it isn't there sometimes it is pretty bad. It is usually more noticeable at idle. I read in another thread that it may be the SC but what about it? Dead bearing, just normal, something else??? Also, my first thought was p/s pump, are either of these things a common problem? Any help appreciated, thanks!!

superchargers always whine at idle...but thats just my take on this, if it was power steering, it would only do it while steering

The 3800 supercharged has a roots air pump 'supercharger' that is always spun by the engine (there isn't a clutch like the air conditioning compressor, like the lysholm superchargers have MB C32AMG, SL55AMG)
But that is okay if the supercharger bypass/recirculation valve is working properly. Most of the time the engine doesn't need 'boost' from the roots, so the output is returned to the inlet so the roots just pumps in circles. but when you need power the valve is closed (fairly quickly) and you have GO.
If the valve is stuck closed, you are going to hear the supercharger whine, and the mileage is also going to be pretty low.

If the car is stock, the supercharger whine is usually barely noticeable.

Does the whine frequency increase with engine RPM? Could be the SC.

Also, if it's the P/S pump, naturally the whine should get louder if you turn the steering wheel at a stop. I have heard that GM P/S pumps are more prone to whining. I know mine does...
