Sucks to have just bought an LX with a 4 speed auto.

You have to upgrade to the highest package to get the 6 speed auto. Comes standard with a 4 speed, just like the LX's. And you have to upgrade to the higher model to get the 5 speed auto on the LX's.

Besides you don't get 340 horses out of a Mazda.

But the 6 also isn't overweight, softly sprung, or given the wrong tires for hauling around 4000lbs of metal. ;)

I do like the looks of a 6. Alot. I'd have to try driving one to make sure, but gimme a 6 hatchback (excuse me, "Sport") with the sport package, the V6, and the manual transmission (although, why is it a 6-speed auto, but only a 5-speed manual?), and I'll probably be a happy boy.

If it's a 6 speed auto vs 5 speed stick my bet would be on the auto in a race... although sticks are more fun to drive

The 6 Weighs 3347 (220 HP, 190 LB/Torque)
The 300C Weighs 4046 (340 HP, 390 LB/Torque)

It's okay looking, but I'd rather have the New Subaru if I was going for something that size.

Mazda's manual transmissions are legendary. I've driven some Miatas and owned a 1995 626 2.0L 5-spd. Its just so "snickety" precise. Makes a slow car feel great.

I havent driven a 6, but I think I'd order one with a manual no matter what.

The performance gain isn't that much flat out, in day to day having the right gear all the time will be the advantage.
Right now with the JATCO five speed auto first and fifth gear are useless, you can take corners fast enought that you will be above the maximum downshift speed and the ford engine doesn't have that much bottom end (<4000), keeping fifth for highway cruise.
Now with the AisinWarner 6A, you discard 1st, and 6th, leaving 4 beautifully spaced ratios. the new 2nd is a smidge shorter, so is 3, the new 4th is way better for highspeed hijinx (85-115), and if uncoverned, 140 is doable in the new 5th, and you can 'cruise' at 125 in 6th (basically floored)
And with all the shifting, the 5speed stick is still a little faster and quicker in the 1/4

I had a Probe GT=Mazda MX6 and the manual transmission kind of sucked... also have driven Mazda 323 with sticks and those one's suck too... comparison wise my brothers 01 Mitsu Eclipse has a real nice tranny and the car he had before that a 94 Dodge Stealth had the best I have ever driven
