It's really sweet, but I don't know how long this horsepower war can go on for with the gas prices the way they are right now. Still that 6.1 magnum makes my blood boil. It'll put an end to the bad analogy to the v6 magnums that Crysler has been cranking out in the 90's.

Hopefully the new Magnum Hemi would make the Ram more powerful at lower rpms. The current Hemi has a lot to brag, but falls short when compared to Nissan's Titan. The Titan cleans the Hemi's clock in just about any sort of accelerating and towing match with the exception of a highway-speed, roll-on up a 6% grade - something a truck owner is very unlikely to perform.

But if I'm buying a truck right now, I'd still choose the Cummins 600 over anything. Diesels rule, just look at the VW V10 TDi: 310 hp, 553 lb-ft of torque, 17 mpg city, 23mpg higway. Find a gas truck that can to that.

Well thats the main reason why it's mentioned that the 5.7 is receiving a boost in power. I wonder if the 6.1 will go into the 1500...now that would be a beast short of the SRT-10...

Actually, a group of guys from Dodge Talk and guys from a Titan forum met up at a dragstrip recently. Some were bone stock, some were slightly modded with the typical stuff (exhausts, CAI's, etc). It was basically called a dead match up. 2wd regular cab Rams with the Hemi were fastest, but of course the Titan isn't available as a regular cab. For the most part, similar style trucks (4X4 quad-cab vs. 4X4 king cab, 2wd vs 2wd, wtc) were trading wins, usually seperated by just a couple of hundredths. One thing that definitely slows down the Ram, is the 20" wheels if it has them. They are very heavy, at about 85lbs each. I'm pretty sure one with these wheels usually will loose to a similar Titan. With the 17" wheels though, the Ram performs better. The Dodge also has the computer working against it, with the "Torque Management" programming holding it back with retarded timing just when you want it most. Most Rams with the Hemi will dyno 270 to 290HP at the wheels, and over 300 ft-lbs torque. That's not too bad of a parasitic loss, but not great. Of course, the computer steps in again, with it's 105 mph speed limiter. This speed is reached on the dyno, keeping the Hemi from reaching it's true peak HP from what I understand.
