Post New Galant kills Diamante

EXPORTS of the Adelaide-built Mitsubishi Magna to the US have been stopped as the model sales plunge into free-fall. The last shipment of Diamantes
was sent about four weeks ago. While Mitsubishi Australia concedes the decision is a blow, it had been expected for some time and had been accounted for.
“It adds to a challenging environment,” said Mitsubishi Australia spokesman Charles Iles. “It takes some useful volume away from our manufacturing operation and we would have certainly liked to have seen it go a bit longer.”
Diamante sales have been hurt by new generation Galant being roughly equivalent in size and a much newer car. Ironically, the Galant also forms
the basis for the next generation Magna replacement due to start
production in Adelaide late in 2005.
Mitsubishi Australia now expects to export no more than 6000 cars in 2004, compared to almost 10,000 in 2003. A record 18,000 Diamantes were shipped to the US in 2002. To the end of June 2571 Diamantes had been sold in the
US, down 54.2 per cent compared to the same period in 2003.
The Diamante is not the only casualty, with the Japanese-built Montero Sport (Challenger here) also axed. Magna sales in Australia are also dramatically Down in 2004 as the car’s age, controversial re-styling and speculation over the company’s local future bite hard.

No matter how hot she is, someone, somewhere, is sick of her shit....

Yeah me to, very nice cars to drive... good power and ride. It's a pity cuz there's an all new one coming out in Australia in 05 that in my opinion looks better than the Galant, but there ya go

Nissan did the same thing kinda when the new Altima came out before the new Maxima. The car was the same size as the older Maxima, maybe even bigger for a lesser price.

But it was still fugly, whereas the last-gen Maxima is, IMO, still a good looker (and much better looking than the monstrosity that replaced it.)

Joss, I agree with you. But sales #'s don't agree with us :(

And along that line of logic, I think the current (soon to be last) model of the Diamante looks better than the new Galant as well.

The old Maxima still did well in sales after the new Altima came out(Altima is doing great in sales numbers). The new one(Maxima) is doing very well and looks great.

The van is not doing very well(that one is ugly). The Titan had a slow start but is starting to do some good numbers.

Mitsu is done. Time to put a fork in them. Toyota needs extra production space. Will they buy some plants now or wait for a deal after bankruptcy?
