'04 Jeep Liberty

Anybody have any bad or concerning experiences or knowledge of Liberties, or good stories for that matter? Thinking of picking up a Renegade edition. Bear in mind, i don't care that it's not solid axles, i don't go wheeling. I want something that can handle the New England winters and still give a nice ride. I looked at Lexus RX 300's but decent ones are a little rich for my blood.

I personally think they are far too small for a jeep, and they have a really ugly body design, especially those headlights.

If I were you, I would go for a Jeep Grand Cherokee Larado. My mom had a 2001 and she says to this day (she owns a 2004 Trailblazer now) that the Jeep was her favorite car.

I must admit, I did enjoy the Grand Cherokee Larado MUCH more than my cousin's Liberty...far too tight. And kinda ugly, did I mention that?

My '00 Grand Cherokee is just barely big enough for me. My kids in the backseat feet and legs dig into the front seatbacks, and my right leg gets sore on long drives because the the floor hump pushes the gas pedal way over and I have to hold my leg in an unnatural position against the console. Also, the brake pedal is too far over to the left due to the floor crampness, and I have to use my left foot on the brake sometimes, because when I rotate my right foot over to it and push, part of my foot will still be on the gas pedal. I could not possibly imagine driving an even more cramped Liberty. I like them and all, and they have done very well in quality/satisfaction ratings compared to other Jeep models, but no way could I use one as a family vehicle.

Well the best thing to do is to go test drive one and see how you like it. Although some might not call it a real Jeep...it's a fine small SUV, and does alot better than anything anyone else puts out for offroad. Ever take a CRV off road?? lol

My stepdaughter just picked up her new Liberty Monday. Ask her in a couple of months/years how she feels about it...

She got mud on it from my brother in law's driveway (her uncle) and she was real upset... WTF did she buy a Jeep for, then?!!?

The local dealership sponsors a reunion weekend where you can take your Jeeps out on some pretty 'interesting' trails in Northern Wisconsin and have the 'security' of travelling in a pack of like-minded and well-equipped Jeep drivers. I borrowed the GFs Liberty Limited and the BIL and I headed up.

Now I'm 6'2"/230. The ride up was 'intersting' in that I simply could not get comfortable in the front seats, either side. At one gas stop the BiL and I had a look see at the seats and it appears that the power mechanisms take about 1.5" of height and almost 2" of retract space away from the adjustments. We verified this by looking at the seat layouts of a Renegade model once we caught up to everyone at the trailhead.

Relocating the seats some 2" to the rear is something I'm interested in but the GF is a little leery of (go figure). There have never been more than two adults and one kid in the jeep at any one time so the loss of rear-seat leg room shouldn't be a factor.

Anyway, once on the trail we more than kept up with the CJs and Wranglers and passed all of the GCs. Lots of places where an inexperienced driver or three got themselves high-centered and needed a winch-pull to come off the rocks. The Liberty with it's smaller footprint (width/length) made quick work of the trecherous areas.

Plus we had that neat Jeep tent extension for the backend on the two camping overnights. Only one other tent setup like that in the expedition.

I'm trying to talk the GF into heading to Camp Jeep next summer for vacation.

Thanx for the opinions guys, keep em comin. I've already test-driven one, and have a dealer that's itchin to sell me one. I liked the ride initially, and i'm gonna drive one again Monday to see if i still like it. Bear in mind, most of the issues i read were size. A little info, i'm 5'9" and 135 lbs. I'm like a little child in the intrepid lol. Anywho, i'm really looking to see if there were any major reliability concerns. I read up on the GC, both the Laredo and the Limited, and wasn't impressed. I found many dissatisfied customers with major problems under 50,000 miles. Plus, i have no need for something that big. But anyways, i thank you all for your help, and keep it comin.

You should find a Liberty forum and check that out... DMAG hasn't replied to this thread and he had one so I would suggest PM'ing him....

Personally for urban driving I would go with the Limited. Although the Renegade looks cool with all the lights. Not sure if you've looked at a Limited Model or not.

Of course for 05 it's getting a refresh:

The projected turbo-diesel should be nice.

that refresh is kinda ugly, i like the original better. i like the limited, but it looks too boring. i want something unique. also, new england winters see some shitty storms, and it'd be fun to bust out those roof lights every now n then. i like the more agressive look of the renegade.
