What's a Plymouth Laser

I'm just wondering if it's the same car as an Eagle Talon? Same interior etc?

1.8L engine with a 5-speed tranny.........any good?

Rob

From what I understand it's the same car as a Talon, just with some different body pannels and such.

The Eagle Talon (and twin Plymouth Laser) was a two door sports car produced jointly by Chrysler and Mitsubishi in a project commonly known as Diamond Star Motors (DSM). This colaboration between Chrysler and Mitsubishi produced several vehicles, but only three are commonly known as "DSMs". These were the Mitsubishi Eclipse, and badge-engineered Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser. All three vehicles were mechanically identical, the differences being purely cosmetic.

1G
The first-generation Talon/Laser was produced from (model years) 1990 to 1994, afterwhich the Plymouth Laser was discontinued. This era of DSM vehicles is commonly referred to as the first generation, or 1G for short. It was a 2+2 design, meaning two full size seats in front, plus two small, cramped seats in the back suitable for only children or cargo.

There were four models of Plymouth Laser:

base
RS
RS Turbo
RS Turbo AWD
The base model was front wheel drive and home to an unfortunately underpowered 1.8L engine. The RS model sported a naturally aspirated version 2.0 liter Mitsubishi 4G63 engine. The RS Turbo model and RS Turbo AWD (all wheel drive) models were powered by the same engine, with the addition of a turbocharger to boost performance significantly. Note that the RS Turbo AWD Laser was not available until the 1992 model year.

All Plymouth Lasers were built in Normal, Illinois. The last Laser rolled off the assembly line on June 17, 1994.

2G
The second-generation (2G) was produced from 1995 until 1998. There was no second-generation Plymouth Laser.

I THINK I might buy this one..........it's a '91 with about 95,000 miles on the dial.
$2500US approx.....it's pre-modded with a wing and stuff, but it'd be a good daily driver while the Intrepid R/T sits in the garage ;)

Avoid the 1.8L at all costs. It is a unreliable engine.

Get the 2.0L, or 2.0L turbo. But really, if you want something reliable, you shouldn't be looking at DSMs.

I still have no idea why you want one. What can a FWD 1.8L talon do that your tempo can not?

92 HP? Damn. If your going to do that, go and get a Neon. At least they have the 2.0 in them and you can find 2 or 4 doors.

The cousin of the Plymouth Laser was the Dodge Daytonna. The Talon looks different to me, but i could be wrong.
I agree with getting neon instead. I had to repair the fuel rail twice on an old laser.

Chrysler Laser was the twin for the 84 to 86 Dodge Daytona. They came with the 2.2. SOHC turbo 146 hp.

Yes. Back in those years it was. The 90-94 Lasers are DSMs and have nothing to do with the Daytona.

It has the 1.8L, so it's a DSM. The 1.8L is a mitsubishi engine.

price is a little high too. I was looking at one for my little brother and the 2.0 turbo with 100K miles had a KBB value of only like $1900. And I learned they have some rather notorious problems with the hatches leaking and clutches not being worth a damn.

yeah you can find something a lot cheaper, rob. my friend had a 92 eagle talon AWD tsi with 3 inch exhaust, water injection, chip, 16g turbo and a $200 Maaco paintjob. he got $4500 for it (he ripped this kid off HUGE as he only paid like $2500 for it).

oh and yeah, stay away from the 1.8 like hypnos said....very bad engine

but then again, DSM's are not really reliable in the first place so who knows

OK...........staying away from the 1.8L...........I'm gonna look at 2.0 and 2.0 Turbo's.

What I REALLY want is an Avenger, but I can't find one with a 5-speed, they're ALL automatic :( .........and too expensive for the most part :(

The auto avengers/sebrings (1G) autos have either the 2.0L neon engine, or the 2.5L v6 mitsu engine. The manuals only come with the 2.0L.

But the manual 2.0L is really the best ot have.
