VW Phaeton Folly

From Autoextremist.com :

Phaeton Folly:

VW. Well, that was fun. As predicted, VW is slapping on a discounted lease in order to move "Piech's Folly" - otherwise known as the VW Phaeton. It doesn't matter how good the car is or how well-equipped it is or even how much the automotive media has been extolling its virtues of late - the fact remains that, as they say in the country, "that dog won't hunt." You can't overcome 50 years of value-based history in this market overnight, so whatever the merits of the Phaeton are on its own, it just hasn't been able to overcome the fact that the VW badge is a major impediment for people when it comes to spending $70,000 (and up) on a luxury sedan. VW has sold exactly 939 Phaetons since the beginning of the year, through July. The new lease, which involves a payment of $699 per month on a 36-month lease, requires startup costs of $5500. There will also be a special 48-hour test-drive available to interested prospects. Suffice to say, no matter who decides to sign up for the car during these "blowout" sales days, the Phaeton will go down as one of the biggest market miscalculations in automotive history.

Well without a doubt I can see why. Paying that much for a VW? Pffft...I would rather have the Audi.

Funny that the Crossfire outsells the Audi TT, the Mercedes... oh how could that be? Why don't you try your Chrysler bashing at another board.

How long has the Crossfire been out for? I've seen 3 of them. I like them, but the last one I saw on the highway had my wife scrunching up her face, she thought it was so ugly. I think it's a sharp little car, that just should have had more HP come standard on it.

Adaptabl is just talking crap cause his little predictions about Chrysler cars not selling are getting proven wrong. He's prolly burning up inside seeing the 300 doing so well in sales and he said that it would not sell. So he just uses news from other companies and tries to bash Chrysler with it. Get a life adaptabl.

They probably would have sold a bucket load of them if they called it an Audi instead of VW, after all it's the same company.

I think part of my problem is living in New England. SUV's and awd cars have become so popular here since the decline of rwd cars in the eighties. I think the average person is scared of rwd. Take the WRX, STi, and EVO. I see tons of them all day. I differ from the other nay-sayers in that I actually really like the Magnum and 300, and want them to sell well, and set an example for other makers to follow and start making more rwd's of their own. I am 100% honest and without spite when I say I don't see these cars around, even with all the driving I do. Tonight I saw a black 300, non-"C". It was the first black one I've seen. I'll see, probably one a week. I've seen 2 Magnums. One that ugly off-white/milkshake color, and the other red, neither was an R/T. If they are selling so well, it's just not around here I guess.

I am starting to see quite a few 300Cs but I still don't see any Magnums or Crossfires on the road. Well I see 1 Magnum in the parking lot in work everyday (white eek that's a bad color) and I saw one Crossfire at Horseneck Beach last weekend.

What Mercedes? The SLK? I want one bad!
