Stereo replacement for 2003 Intrepid SE

Hello everyone. I have a 2003 intrepid SE that requires a much needed radio improvement. What I want is really good sound quality. No need to take apart the car with loud sound or too much bass.

Don't know anything about the language of mid range freq, bass and so forth. So I went to best buys to try and get information about the subject. So basically the guy told me the way to go was with a Alpine system. I want to have Apple car play, touch screen and navigation. With Apple car play I can use the phone for directions since a nav system will be too expensive. He said since I don't want a loud system I don't need an amplifier, that the power from the radio will be sufficient for the speakers and than I could use the same wire harness from my car. So no need to rewire. I already got a set of sails speakers from a 300M to ad to my car.

When he looked in the computer he told me the Alpine radio will not work in my car because I would have to modify the dash to make it fit and that they don't make a face cover to convert from a single din to a double din. So he recommended a new Pioneer radio that has a face plate that comes out and fit in a single din dash. I researched the radio in Amazon and it has mix reviews, some good some bad. Im afraid that the mechanism that brings the face plate out is prone to failure.

So I am looking for great sound quality, don't know if I need and amplifier, do i need to rewire the car???
These are the photos that I took from the store of the equipment he recommended. The store did not have 6 * 9 for the rear speakers at the time.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Leo

Have you checked Crutchfield.com for any other options? $599 is almost NAV territory for many other brands. Granted you want a single DIN but that's a lot of $$$ for what you're getting. If nothing else...research the Make/Model # online. I bet you can find it for much less than Best Ripoff!

Biggest issue you'll run into is that motorized screen. It'll fail eventually no matter the brand.

^ What he said. I know there was a dude at one point that made custom 2-din bezels so you could do something like that..

Sorry to waste your time. What are you expecting on this? Several replies?

We're trying to help you regarding price especially. If you like tossing your money away and not saving anything with a little research then by all means go with "Best Bozos"! Pretty much all Local Installer shops will rip you a new one.

Something to consider is that if they only have a 2 Single DIN Motorized screen units that means the market has moved on for one or more reasons. Used to be there were several on the market and now the herd has thinned. My bet is the problems with the motorized screen.

You really don't have much choice for a Single DIN unit so you'll pay the price. I suggested Crutchfield as they're an excellent reference for what's available and what will fit a specific vehicle. Doesn't mean you need to go with them but you can then research getting stereo equipment cheaper. Sorry to reply. I won't bother you any more in any of your future posts.

The biggest issue is getting a Double DIN bezel for an LH car. As Ken said there used to be a guy offering to make them but they weren't cheap....over $200 if I remember. Cutting up the dash behind the bezel wasn't a big deal. Just a single plastic cross member to remove and you've got plenty of space for a Double DIN. There never were Aftermarket Double Din bezel adapters for our cars.

That's the last of my advice. Again...won't butt in and waste your time anymore in the future.

Hey there Ron,
This is what I got from Cruthfield.

Hey there Leo!

Awesome, sure we can help you get a really fantastic system in there. That Pioneer radio you mentioned really is the best one for your vehicle based on what fits and what you are looking for. Honestly, it's a great unit and I'm not aware of any issues with it. Pioneer makes a really good motorized screen too, so I would not anticipate any issues with that.

Replacing the speakers is a very good idea and you would not need to re wire the system to do so. And adding a subwoofer would make a huge difference too. I'd suggest some Polk speakers for the system to give you some really good clarity and some great midrange. We can go with these<http://www.crutchfield.com/p_107DB652/item.html> up front and match them with these<http://www.crutchfield.com/p_107DB692/item.html> in the rear. And then for bass, I'd suggest this Rockford powered subwoofer<http://www.crutchfield.com/p_575P30010/item.html>. That one has the amp already built into it and really does a fantastic job. I've set up a link here to show you everything you will need including the wiring.

I hope you like what you see there! And when you decide to place your order, please include my name for your Advisor during checkout. I really appreciate it.

Thanks and have a great day!

Chad

They recommend the Pioneer. But I agree, since the beginning I knew the weakness is the motorize face plate. Also they have the same price, no savings there like the one in BestRipoff!!!!

Also the subwoofer, is too big, I don't like the idea of that big box in the trunk. They have 8 inch ones, as always your input is greatly appreciated.

Just replacing the front and rear speakers will help greatly. I've used Crutchfield for over 30 years for their wire OEM kits for the radio (aftermarket radial) and speaker harness (aftermarket speakers).

The front speakers are easy to change out - if you get the wiring connectors.

The 6x9 in the rears require the rear seat removal, rear deck removal - to access the speakers- then wiring connectors.

Not certain "what OEM amp" came in the 2003 SE - there's a certain OEM amp that LH people use for really decent sound quality. I believe "plug and play" item. No idea of the factory number - something about the "AC" at the end....

Now - if you want to tear the car apart to install a new head deck, run power wires, RCA cables, etc - then adding amps or a powered subwoofer is an option. Many of us have done it. It takes time to do it right.

I have an aftermarket deck, 3 amps in the truck, one 12" sub in custom box, custom A pillar speakers, and aftermarket door speakers. It wasn't a day project.

Leo...do you have OEM Sail speakers up at the front doors? If you do then you have a MidLine system with a modest amp. If no Sail speakers then no amp and the speakers are run off the Radio only.

The Amp Chris talks about is only available in the 300m/LHS and some Concordes at 360w. It's not a quick swap into an Intrepid period. The biggest amp an Intrepid got was 240w with the Infinity I system. If you have a MidLine the amp is 120w. If just Base audio....maybe 25w/channel from the Radio alone.

If you buy from Crutchfield there won't be Sales Tax? Also is Crutchfield supplying the Adapter Plate Bezel and Wiring harness for the Radio price or is it extra? If extra it's probably cheaper the BestRipoff anyway. With everything Crutchfield can supply it's any easy DIY install.

Also wouldn't worry about a Subwoofer right now but decent door/rear deck speakers would be a big improvement with the new radio. The rear deck 6x9 aren't difficult to get to and replace actually. Removing the back seat/rear parcel shelf and C pillar plastic is very easy.

Good morning Scooter and Ron,

Just got up. Had pancakes for breakfast!!!!

What do you guys think about the set up from Crutchfield???. The link is in the previous post. Are those speakers good in your opinion? Anything is better of what I have right now, old and blown i guess better than 2003 technology!!!!.

My car has everything base. Nothing fancy, no amp. I got the sail speakers from a 300 in Tallahassee. The cables are just hanging there. Nothing connected yet since I need new front door panels anyway.

The back seat is removed since I am waiting for the seats to be redone. I have full access to the rear speakers. The rug is still out. There is a harness adapter for the radio and the bezel is included. I am thinking Ron to go with the Alpine instead with the Pioneer. I agree 100% with you, that motorize door will eventually fail.

The thing is cutting the face plate of the car to make sure is a nice fit. Maybe using black weather strip seal to cover the edges?????

Polk makes great speakers. Those prices are about average for good speakers. I have Polks at home in my Living Room!

What's the Alpine model number?

Also that Pioneer is selling for way less than $599 on Amazon and Ebay. As low as $439. The Bezel adapter, Wiring Adapter and Antenna adapter are all standard Metra parts and can be found just about anywhere. I don't know why they included the steering wheel Control adapter for $29.37. Your car doesn't have steering wheel audio buttons and the Pioneer doesn't need them to work. So delete that along with the powered Sub.

Infinity, JBL and Focal are also good speaker brands.
