Smile Picked up an amp about as old as my car

So, I found a used amp for dirt cheap, a Precision Audio THA-4000. I know it's nothing great, but who knows, maybe it'll give my rears a little more to work with. It's a four channel (75W x 4), and I guess it's a re-branded Phoenix Gold amp? (http://phoenixphorum.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=18738)

I did some crude wiring, and it does appear to power on, I'll just need a day off to really hook it up and see if it does anything for me. I may even use all four channels and feed my fronts if it works well. I'll bet this thing brings back memories for some of you, and I'd definitely like to put it to work in my mid 90's machine. I'm working on cleaning up the car in general so I can take some pictures and get some real fun projects going.

Like I said, I know this amp isn't going to be up for running subs or anything crazy, but my rears are pretty decent already, so we'll see if I can give them some thicker speaker wire from this guy. May not notice a huge difference, but it's all for the fun of trying.

I haven't done the searching to see it, but if it is 75x4 RMS, then it is a decent power amp - may not be wonderfully clean sound, but it will be louder than what you have now - and it would run some subs with some work - like crossovers. Still running the factory head unit in the car?

EDIT: Hehehehe I just opened the link - no, that won't power subs for much. Sure, it would make them make audio sounds, and they would fill in some lower end frequencies, but they won't do much for 'thump', despite the graphics on the case. That 75x4RMS is MAX power, and RMS is at most half that, if not slightly less. Based on the size of the amp, I'd say it is probably about a 10x4 amp or less - which is about what your headunit is when driving 2ohm speakers. It will be louder than your head unit, maybe - but be sure to note, most OEM speakers are 2ohm, not 4ohm... Not sure with 1st gen off the top of my head though.

Yeah, I figured it wasn't going to do a whole lot for me, but for $5 thought I'd take a stab at it. The guy who owned the car before me was nice enough to install a receiver sometime before. It's a JVC KD-S790; 200W max 4 channel. So I do have the RCA outputs which is nice for when I do manage to get a good amp. My speakers also were upgraded at some time; my fronts are Sony's I think they're XS-F1320's which are 120W max, 30RMS @ 4 ohm. The rears are Pioneers, don't recall the model, but similar specs, I know 120W max for sure, don't know RMS or impedance though. I didn't know if I might be able to get something out of the amp for my rears, as they're the speakers producing my lows right now. Just don't have the money to invest into the audio side of things right now, too much still needs to be worked on elsewhere.

Oh well, I'm only out $5 and a half hour if it's complete garbage. We'll see Saturday when I've got some time how (if) it works.

Eh, it's a $5 amp. The 200 watt head unit I'd not put much water in as being really 200 watts - It is honestly probably more along the lines of the amp you bought for 5... I could be wrong, but that's a lot of heat to dissipate behind the dash IMO.

Have fun with it!

well to see if the thing even works... and just have it turn on... have a wire connect from the positive on the amp and run it to the battery.. then have a wire from the ground run it to the battery or anywhere under the hood that is bare metal... then have a small wire or whatever run from the remote turn on to the battery again... if the light turns on it works... at least turns on... if not its dead.. then you dont have to run all that wiring for nothing and not find out it dont work
