1994 Chrysler Concorde

Hello everyone, my name is Tony Wilbanks thank you for letting me be a part of your group my Concorde has 109066 miles on it it is in really good shape. It was a gift from a friend that is a ww11 veteran. The car runs good it just shuts off after about a hour driving it. When I come to a stop it just shuts off like i turned the key off. I replaced the fuel filter and the purge valve and the distributor and also the cam shaft position sensor. Also I switched the auto shut down relay with the HVAC relay and the eatx relay with the wiper relay to see if one of them was sticking when it got hot. After i replaced the cam sensor it was still hard to start but after about the 5th time it fired up. The instructions say that the paper spacer on the end of the sensor will get shaved off after starting the car. Some I'm thinking that's why it was hard to start after installing. So far so good it hasn't shut off on me yet. I will keep everyone updated.

If it was consistently shutting off after an hour of driving, but now is not, that’s an indication that you fixed the problem - whatever it was. That, or your car is messing with you and will wait until you’ve forgotten all about and start acting up again!

The cam sensors are known for operating intermittently like that when they’re in the process of final failing (and not throwing a code because apparently the ECU has to count a certain number of bad pulses in a given run cycle before throwing the code, and it temporarily just craps out and stops the engine before it reaches that count - that’s the theory anyway). The advice by some on this forum is to replace the cam and crank sensors together since they aren’t very expensive. Also people have had better success getting the engine sensors from a Chrysler dealer rather than going aftermarket. Since it appears to be OK, you could just stick with what you’ve got and see how that goes.

I wouldn’t think the spacer would affect the sensor operation before it disappeared, but doesn’t matter now.
