Question New member, Intrepid troubles

Well, I've just come across this site, and I love it. I haven't heard of many people loving the Intrepid as I do. Now I know there are others out there. ;)

My mom's 1999 Intrepid is having some trouble though. The idler fell off of the engine casing (physically, the steen looked like it was torn) screwing up the alternator and the power steering. Has this happened to anyone else? We've never heard of anything like this happening.

Hopefully I'll be around for a while, this looks like a great place.

Welcome to the board dargo21.
Are you saying the aluminum casting that the idler bolts onto broke or the idler came off it's bracket? I'm not saying it does but it could have something to do with your recent engine rebuild. Sometimes the bearing on the idler will go and the idler may squeal a little or make a grinding noise. I guess if someone were to let it go too long without fixing it the idler could sieze up or get so hot it could become loose. The other thing would be that maybe someone didn't tighten all the bolts properly.

Thanks for the welcome's.

The casting broke off from each bolt. The bolts were still attached to the engine, but the idler was laying down under the fan once the car was stopped. The power steering belt was also off, but it was in one piece. There was no squealing, just a big Bam when it broke off. Then the check engine light came on, and there was no power steering. The engine itself sounded fine.

We thought that it might have been from the engine rebuild, but the mechanic said that he didn't know how it could have happened.

Should I still ask the question in the other forum? I don't want to ask the same thing all over the place.

How much time has passed between the engine rebuild and the idler problem?

The rebuild was in July, so about 5 months.

Another problem though is that it was rebuilt in Seattle, where it was bought (and where my mom lived) but she just recently moved to so. california.

Thanks for the welcome again, everyone.

The Dodge dealer fixed it for $230, replacing the idler and the belt which runs the idler, the alternator and power steering.

We just thought that it was wierd that the idler could just fall off...

Sounds like a classic case of over tightening the bolts.. cracking the casting. Cast Alloy ain't that strong.
