Smile Trans and Diff Fluids

Hello All:

Have another question:

I have noticed that when trans fluid is recommended it is usually Mopar Type 7176 ATF 3/4

What is the difference between 3 and 4 ???

Is one better than the other ??? Is one used for certain conditions and the other for other situations ???? Does it matter or is it just an issue of what is available at the time ????

What does the designation "7176" mean ???

Also, what is the best fluid for the Differential ???

ATF +3 is an older version of the fluid. +4 is the new stuff. +4 is backwards compatable with +3 as well.

Basicly, use +4.

Use Mobil 1 in the diff. I will say that the manual says specificly not to use synthetics in the diff. However, I have never heard of any problems. Maybe it was due to leak issues that earily synths had.

ATF+ 4 also has the anti foam mixed into it.

Thanks to Hypnos and Ravin for my ATF 3 vs 4 question solution.

If I have the '96 3.3L / 4 spd Auto then I understand I can use the #4 and get the anti-foam benefits, as well as be compatible with my model year.....GREAT !!!!

I am going to get a Trans flush before I take possession. The guy I am buying it from...........a body shop owner who took possession of the car after the former owner decided not to fix it and just go buy a new Jag !!!!..........told me today he would have it serviced by a good friend he knows at a nearby Dodge dealer. He takes all his cars to him from the body shop when the wrecks need pwr train attention.

He also told me he owns a 300M today !!!! I did not know this before. He said he needed some trans work on his 300M and would take my Trep in at the same time !!!!

I told him I wanted the diff drained and filled too. But I only told him to use CHRYSLER fluids. SHOULD I TELL HIM TO MAKE SURE MOBIL 1 IS USED IN THE DIFF ???? He has volunteered to do the service for me PRIOR to my taking possession so I won't have to pay for it. And even if I did I prob could take advantage of the "Professional Discount" he gets from his Dodge Friend.

I am very impressed by this man's honesty and good business methods. When I told him my TC burned and was looking for a replacement he told me he MIGHT have just the car I was looking for. I and my son drove it and my son heard a noise in the engine that he thought was valve lifter ticking or similar. The man said he'd send it to his wrench and see what it was BEFORE I paid anything.

They renewed the H2O pump and Serp Belt, just cuz it was torn down and a good item to renew at that time. The noise did not stop, so they replaced the Alt and that stopped the noise !!!!! This was all at no charge to me !!!!!

I really trust this guy cuz he does alot of business with the dealership I work at and he would not want to ruin his reputation or business relationships by screwing lowly ol' me !!!

Thanks again, guys. I will remember all the help and pass it along when I am old and gray, like YOU !!!!!! hehehehehehe....

no charge for the belt and pump change.....excellent deal.

pain to do yourself and the dealers charge at least 450 bucks...tough job if you haven't done it before.

sounds like you have a competent mechanic...good luck with your trep in the future....Happy motoring

Yeah......that's right ...........no charge !!!!

Did you notice that he also replaced the Alt at no charge ???

In addition, a few days ago he agree to have the trans flushed and drained at the same time he has his 300M trans serviced this week !!!!

He has a close friend at the Dodge Dealership just one block from his shop (they both are only 5 miles away from me !!) He always gets his vehicles worked on by him and has a strong business relationship with him.

I was telling him I wanted to get the service records on the Trep from the former owners. Wanted to know where they took it cuz there are Four chrysler dealers nearby and I could not find the records at the dealer they bought it from. I wanted to do the trans flush cuz it seems this model has alot of trans probs.

Then he said......

"well. if you want it flushed I'll get that done for you when I have my 300M worked on." I was shocked that he volunteered to have it done......FOR FREE !!!!

I mentioned that I wanted the diff drained and filled also, and that I be glad to pay for it. We'll see if he does and if he charges me for it.

This guy has been so nice throughout the whole deal. I am feeling better and better every day about my purchase and the reliability of the follow-up, should it become necessary. I think a big part of his flexibility was that I did not hassle about the original selling price cuz I thought at first it was very reasonable. Since then, I have found out that it was alittle high for similar TREPS for sale around here but there were intrinsics that I think play a big part. It has low mileage, it was well cared for by the former owner and I now have a very reliable seller. I knew him for several years from my dealership contact with him. I work in the parts dept. We supply all his GM crash parts. He has a very good rep at the dealership and in the community.

He even wrote me a letter of recommendation a year ago that played a part in my winning "Employee of the Month" at my dealership, which included a $500 cash award. I have always tried to treat him well in the "day to day" small stuff and to get him some special treatment when he needed it. Now I think he is paying me back.

Always, always........it's WHO you know, not WHAT you know !!!

And the most valuable part of this whole thing maybe the contact I will make at the Dealership. I am going to try to establish a relationship with that man also. To find and make personal contact with a KNOWLEDGEABLE, RELIABLE, TRUSTWORTHY and INEXPENSIVE Dealer contact, may be most important aspect over the years of ownership to come, which I hope are numerous.

I cannot afford the new ones and I need to stretch this one out. I have heard of many owners getting 200 G's out of their Treps. This one has no rust and thus, if the mechanics stay healthy, I may never need another vehicle to replace this.
