Headlight Renewal

Some idiot (name withheld to protect myself) ran the polisher too close to BOTH headlights last spring, and put a nice even scratch across them. They had the standard flat yellow "varnished over" look to them anyway, so last night I did the sandpaper thing. Had to start out at w/d 220 or 320 to get the scratches out, after that, maybe a minute apiece on 400 on the scratched part, then on the whole light, 600,1000,1500,2000, rubbing compound, polishing compound, and hell, as long as I went that far, swirl remover. About 10-12 minutes a light (without the 320, 400 steps for my screw up), they are glass clear now, and was cost free (I already had all the stuff, as you do...) A lot of us are familiar with this method, but I thought Id mention you can start with some pretty aggressive paper to get a flaw out, and still get 'em mirror smooth.

nicely done Rob. Sounds like good ol fashioned elbow grease and patience pays off after all. I have a similar problem with both my headlights, but in my case, I can't get rid of the water condensation on the inside of both lights. I have the yellow varnish look too and I am basically at the point of just getting 2 new ones to replace the old ones since I can't elbow grease them clean from the inside!

I have done the "elbow grease, rubbing compound, and 2000 grit sandpaper" route before...but after a year they started to fog over again...this time, I just went to Autozone and spent the $6 for the Blue Magic Headlight Restorer...20 minutes or so of polishing and both headlights are clear again, with the exception of the driver's headlight having condensation on the inside bottom...:icon_cry:

I tried the elbow grease method and could never get them that clear. So I just said the hell with it and bought two new ones off ebay for less than 200 bucks and they look better than the originals because the bottom of them is black and it fits with the car much better I believe.
