Faint scratches in the side view mirrors

Hello, fellow enthusiasts!
I am really enjoying my newly purchased '99 Intrepid, and my desire to maintain her well has grown with nearly every post I've read here.
Perhaps you all could help me with a small detailing problem. The finish of the car is, overall, quite good, and I expect that it will come to look even better with regular detailing. One thing puzzles me though. At some time in the Trep's past someone in the process of cleaning scratched -- with many very fine scratches -- the reflective surface of the two side view mirrors. I have learned that these mirrors are not glass, and that the reflective surface is protected only by a very thin 'clear coat', hence very easy to damage irrevokably. I don't really know how to proceed to remove those scratches. I used ScratchX on one of them and didn't see any obvious improvement, but I was being cautious.

A suggestion was simply to go to an auto glass professional and replace the mirror. They are not too expensive from what I gather and the mirror could be maintained properly from that point. What are your thoughts?

Thank you!

Go to a yard, or buy off someone here in the B/S/T section.

First off, mirrors are glass no clear coat or whatever, second, the scratches you see are on the glass not the reflective surface as this is on the back of the glass and you can't posssibly reach and "clean" that area without pulling the glass apart from the plastic housing. Third and more important, those mirrors are pretty cheap and you can replace them easily for the same ones you have now or get the better (more expensive) ones with heat/folding/memory from the 300M's as they fit right in place wich are black and not the cheap looking plastic non-folding that the Intrepids came with. Look in the BST here or Ebay.

Sctaches in the glass are there till the end of time.

Glass can be polished, but it's very difficult and almost always results in poor results or wavy images at best.

If small scratches in the glass bothers you, replacement is tha only thing that will give you the results you will be looking for.

Cheer and welcome to the site.
